New
CSU chief academic officer
Gary
Reichard, provost and senior vice president for academic
affairs at Cal State Long Beach, was appointed as executive
vice chancellor and chief academic officer for the California
State University system at the CSU Board of Trustees meeting
Jan. 31. Reichard has served as the chief academic officer
at Long Beach since 2002 and has been affiliated with the
university since 1994. He also served as associate vice
president for academic personnel, planning and assessment. Reichard
also held faculty and administrative positions at Florida
Atlantic University, Schmidt College of Arts and Humanities,
University of Maryland, University of Delaware and Ohio
State University. Reichard will begin his new duties on
Feb. 10.

Two names were left off last week's list of sabbatical
leaves for the 2006-07 Academic Year:
- Bahman Fozouni, Government, Fall 2006
- Patricia Kearly, Special Education, Fall 2006
These sabbatical leaves were deferred from the 2005-06 academic
year.
Mentoring conference
The
second "Women Mentoring Women" conference will take
place from 8 a.m.- 4 p.m., Friday, Feb. 24 in the University
Union Ballroom. It will include talks by community leaders
and workshops on mentoring and leadership. The deadline for
students to register Feb. 17.

Associate
dean sought
A national search is underway to fill the position of Associate
Dean for Undergraduate Programs in the College of Business
Administration. Screening of applications will begin on
Monday, March 20, and the position is expected to be filled
by July 1. A complete description of qualifications and application

Service learning workshops
The Office of Community Collaboration will hold a
series of training workshops this spring for instructors who
would like to engage students in service learning projects
that enhance mastery of course material:
- Overview of Service Learning and Office of Community
Collaboration Services, Friday, Feb. 10, 12:30-4 p.m.,
Library 5006: Explains definitions, services, community
projects and partnerships, and principles of service learning
course design.
- Designing Your Own Service Learning Course, 12:30-2 p.m.,
Friday, Feb. 24, Calaveras 131: Offers six key elements
of service learning courses, how to address them, and a
review of exemplary service learning course syllabi.
- Measuring Student and Community Outcomes of Service Learning,
12:30-2 p.m., Friday, March 10, Location TBA: Assessing
effects of service learning on mastery of academic material,
critical thinking and knowledge of community; evaluating
and documenting community outcomes; lessons from a four-year,
two-campus service learning student outcomes research study.
- Service Learning and Scholarship, location, date and
time TBA: Methodological challenges and current areas of
focus in service learning research, venues for publication
and presentation, and state and national resources.
Three additional workshops, designed not only for service
learning faculty but also for faculty conducting community-based
scholarly and creative activity or service, and/or instructors
seeking to develop their students' engagement skills, will
also be offered:
- Presenting
Community-based Work for RTP, 12:30-2 p.m., Friday, March
24, location TBA: Educating RTP committees about goals,
evaluating quality and effectiveness, documentation, reporting
community impact, and review of successful files from service
learning faculty
- Finding
and Sustaining a Good Community Partner, 12:30-2 p.m., Friday,
April 7, location TBA: What to look for in a community partner,
what community partners look for from faculty, characteristics
of successful and failed partnerships and the partnership
development process.
- Intentionality
in Engagement, 12:30–2 p.m. April 28, location TBA: What
engagement means, identifying and incorporating engagement
skill-building and assessing engagement outcomes.

Free film
In
recognition of Black History Month, Campus PDA and Faculty
for Peace and Justice will present a free screening of the
film "Malcolm X: Make it Plain" a documentary on
Malcolm X, the revolutionary political activist and leader
of the Black liberation movement. The event will be from 7-10
p.m., Friday, Feb. 17 in the University Union Hinde Auditorium.
Speakers and discussion will follow.

discussion, “How Am I Teaching? Getting Usable Data from

Celebrate “herstory”
The
Center for Teaching and Learning and the Women's Resource
Center are soliciting submissions of papers to be presented
at a Women's History Month forum in March. Participants are
asked to submit an 250-word abstract on a topic related to
“women's issues.” Abstract should be sent to wrc@csus.edu
or campus zip 6060 by 4 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 8.
