Sacramento State will promote the value of higher education at area churches during the fourth annual Super Sunday, Feb. 15.

University President Alexander Gonzalez says, “Our campus has built a strong tradition of reaching out to diverse communities, and Super Sunday is a wonderful opportunity to spread the message that a college education is within reach.”

Gonzalez, University provost and vice president Joseph Sheley, and vice president for Student Affairs Lori Varlotta will visit historically African-American churches in the Sacramento region, including:

  • St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church
    3996 14th Ave.
    Sacramento
  • Oak Park United Methodist Church
    3600 Broadway
    Sacramento

Times for the Feb. 15 visits will be determined.

Super Sunday is an initiative by the California State University system to bring the college message to thousands of prospective students and their families. Statewide, campus presidents, CSU trustees, CSU Chancellor Charles B. Reed and other officials will visit 68 churches, including 41 in Northern California throughout the month.

"At Super Sunday, thousands of students and their families learn that planning for college starts in the sixth grade” Reed says.  “We hope to make communities aware of the steps that students need to complete each year to get to college. We are pleased to say that these efforts are paying off. Since Super Sunday began, the CSU has seen steady increases in African American undergraduate enrollment."

The CSU’s 4-year old partnership with the churches has helped to increase college applications from African American students by 15 percent and enrollments by 8.5 percent.
