Mentoring Women conference
As part
of the University’s celebration of Women’s History Month, Sacramento
State will present the third annual “Women Mentoring Women” conference
on Friday, March 2 from 8:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. in the University Union Ballroom.
“This year’s
theme is ‘Creating Understanding Across Generations,’” says
Pat Grady, director of the Women’s Resource Center and conference committee
member. “It’s a wonderful opportunity for our students to focus
on intergenerational issues in both their professional and personal lives, as
well as seek an opportunity to learn and collaborate with leaders in their fields
of interest.”
More than 50 mentors from
fields such as health care, government, education, law and technology will be
matched up with students who are just beginning their work in their chosen careers.
Mentors and their students will begin the day-long event with a breakfast and
welcome from Gloria Gonzalez, committee chair. Other morning events include
ice-breaker exercises and a keynote address from Sylvia Silva and her two daughters,
Renee Lopez and Maria Lopez. All three women have earned doctorate degrees.
Following the address
by the “trio of two generations of high achievers” will be a luncheon
and panel discussion. Panel participants include retired Sacramento State vice
president for Student Affairs Shirley Uplinger, Associated Students director
Pat Worley, coordinator of the Academic Advising program Kathryn Palmieri, and
Sacramento State student Leslie Barron.
Both morning and afternoon
workshops will feature a variety of topics including financial planning, health
and wellness, leadership and networking.
The conference
is sponsored by the University’s Office of the President, Office of the
Vice President of Student Affairs, Academic Affairs, the Career Center, University
Enterprises, Inc. and the Women’s Resource Center.
