Sacramento State joins city leaders in support of stimulus package
President Gonzalez announces the University's proposed projects
President Obama's economic stimulus plan could help Sacramento State and its students if enacted.
Sacramento State President Alexander Gonzalez joined top regional leaders, including Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson, Monday, Feb. 9, to announce proposed projects that could be funded by the federal stimulus package.
The stimulus package proposed by President Barack Obama is designed to help stimulate the economy by creating upwards of 4 million jobs.
Regional leaders called on Congress to approve the package and listed projects that it could support. Gonzalez urged Congress to modernize college facilities and described the benefits of the University’s proposed projects to Sacramento State students as well as the regional economy.
“With these funds, we can achieve the potential for an unlimited return on our investment, and we can immediately put people to work modernizing our classrooms,” Gonzalez says.
One of the University’s projects that would benefit from stimulus funding is the refurbishment of Del Norte Hall, the old bookstore, which could provide new classrooms, as well as provide jobs to workers renovating the building.
Another potential project, funding for modern science lab equipment, would enhance opportunities for students entering the workforce.
The stimulus package passed the House and Senate and differences in the two versions of the bill are being negotiated on Capitol Hill.
