Professional development seminars in full swing

The Sacramento State spring 2007 Professional Development Seminar series offers managers and supervisors an array of seminars designed to help bring out the best in themselves and their employees.

And there is also help for those who need to brush up on grammatical and proofreading skills.

“With this series, it is our intent to provide opportunities for managers and supervisors to enhance their professional development and growth,” says Kim Harrington, professional development and training coordinator.

“Bringing Out the Best in You and Your Employees” is an interactive and collaborative training session that helps supervisors identify their best managerial traits, boost morale and productivity in respective departments and understand the importance of written performance evaluations and how they relate to one’s effectiveness as a manager. Other areas addressed include how to communicate effectively and how to avoid ‘litigation landmines’ by identifying problems before they emerge. Managers and supervisors can attend either the March 13 or 14 workshop. Both seminars will take place from 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. in the Foothill Suite, University Union.

Moral codes in the workplace are explored in the upcoming series “Managing Workplace Ethics,” a series that promises to be ‘more than just a reiteration of the University’s code of conduct.’ Led by Jaffe Dickerson, the seminar will assist managers and supervisors in spotting ethical and legal violations. Using case studies, participants will look at issues of judgment, loyalty, harassment and confidentiality. The workshop will be held from 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., Thursday, March 15 in the Orchard Suite, University Union.

University staff who wish to brush up on their grammar and proofreading skills are invited to attend “Grammar and Proofreading Skills I and II.” The workshops will review basic grammar and emphasize clear and concise writing methods. Techniques for improving proofreading skills and creating user-friendly paragraphs are also included in the series. The workshops will be held from 8:30 a.m. – noon, Wednesday, April 4 and 11 in the Foothill Suite, University Union.
