Next science lecture focuses on stem cell research

The director of the UC Davis Stem Cell Program is the guest speaker for the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) lecture at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 24, in the University Union’s Redwood Room.

Jan Nolta, a Sacramento State alumnus, will discuss research on how stem cells can be used to repair tissue and to cure diseases. “Different populations of stem cells have been shown to contribute to the regeneration of muscle, neural tissue, the liver, the heart and the vasculature,” she said. However, she stressed that more research is required to understand how the process works.

Nolta, who received her biology degree from Sacramento State in 1984, has been the director of Davis’ stem cell program since 2006.
