Eleven Sacramento State students pursuing careers in high-impact, high-demand health care fields were recognized as Sutter Health Scholars on Friday, Feb. 13.
The students received scholarships from a fund established by Sutter Health, one of the nation's leading not-for-profit networks of community-based health care providers. They are majoring in programs within the College of Health and Human Services and the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics.
During the awards luncheon, students met Sutter Health officials, including recruiters who are looking to hire Sacramento State graduates.
“I love my career in health care, and I’m glad to see you’re going into the same career,” said Thomas Gagen, CEO of Sutter Health’s Sacramento Sierra Region.
Som Xiong, who is studying physical therapy, said he wants to help people in the Hmong community after graduation. Members of Xiong’s family were refugees and he said there are not many physical therapists in his community.
“It’s just great being here at Sacramento State because of the opportunities here,” he said, adding that the Sutter Scholarship “really does help” in terms of paying for school.
Gagen also had some career advice for the students. “You’re dealing with human people. Don’t forget that, and you’ll be very successful.”
