Educators invited to ‘Reading and
Writing Across the Curriculum’

Successful approaches to teaching good reading and writing skills in all disciplines will be the focus of Sacramento State’s third biannual Reading and Writing Across the Curriculum Conference. The free conference will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Friday, Feb. 29, in the University Union Orchard and Forest Suites.

Often, instructors view responsibility for quality writing skills as the sole function of English composition classes, but, says Sacramento State reading and writing coordinator Dan Melzer, it’s impossible for English composition teachers to prepare students for all the types of writing needed in their various disciplines. Rather, teachers within a discipline are best prepared to teach the writing required by their discipline, Melzer explains.

“While teaching writing in English class is certainly helpful, writing must also be discipline-specific. Different writing skills are required for different disciplines,” Melzer says. The purpose of the conference is to enable teachers from all subjects to teach the writing skills their area of expertise requires, he adds.

The conference is expected to draw at least 50 instructors and administrators from Sacramento State, UC Davis, and the region’s community colleges. A conference program with presentation abstracts is available at www.csus.edu/wac/conference. For more information, contact Melzer at 278-6925 or melzer@csus.edu.
