Scholarship

Six professors from the Department of Physical Therapy have had their research accepted for presentation at The World Confederation for Physical Therapy (WCPT) Congress, in Vancouver, B.C.:

Michael McKeough will present “Student attitudes and perceptions about computer-based neuroanatomy learning modules: factors and implications for successful computer based instruction within clinical education.”

Clare Lewis will present “Motion analysis of e3™ fitness grips [trademark] used when running.”

Brad Stockert will present “Concurrent validity of the star excursion balance test in a geriatric population” and “Test-retest reliability of the star excursion balance test in a geriatric population.”

Rafael Escamilla, will present “Training and rehabilitation implications for the trunk and extremities while performing Swiss ball and conventional exercises: an electromyographic analysis.”

Susan McGinty, will present “A study of Limited English Proficiency (LEP) in patients served by physical therapy practices in northern California.”

Edward Barakatt will present “An exploration of Maitland’s construct of low back pain irritability.”

Gale Justin, Philosophy, gave an invited reply to a paper by Charles Griswold, Boston University, on "Plato and Forgiveness as a Virtue" at the 12th Annual Arizona Colloquium in Ancient Philosophy, University of Arizona, Feb. 16 – 18.

Wendy Matlock, English, presented "Gender and Governance in The Thrush and the Nightingale," at the 13th Annual Arizona Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies Conference on "Masculinities and Femininities in the Middle Ages and Renaissance," Feb. 17.

The following Sacramento State professors presented papers at the 2nd Annual Conference on Community-Based Teaching & Research, Feb. 23-24 in San Jose, CA:

Greg Kim-Ju
, Psychology, Julia Figueroa, Ethnic Studies, Greg Mark, Ethnic Studies, Erin Jensen and Anya Marquez presented "Working with Diverse Communities: Developing Cultural Competency for University Service-Learners: Utilizing an Ethnic Studies Service-Learning Model."

Ernest Cowles, Institute for Social Research, presented "Partnership for community-based participatory research (CBPR) to reduce racial and ethnic disparities in cancer prevention and control in our region."

Ana Garcia-Nevare and Susan Gomez, Child Development Programs, presented "The Impact of Service Learning Placement Type on Pre-service Teachers’ Career Goal Exploration and Commitment to Working with Diverse Learners."

Jean Gonsier-Gerdin, Psychology, presented "Developing Advocates and Leaders through Service-Learning in Pre-Service and In-Service Special Education Programs."

Robert G. Mogull, Emeritus Professor of Business Statistics, had a letter to the editor, titled “Measures of Poverty," published in the Sept. 15 Sacramento Bee. His studies on California state poverty were discussed in Dan Walters' political column in the Jan. 14 Sacramento Bee.

Tim Capron, Criminal Justice, was interviewed on Dec. 15 on KCRA Channel 3 about the threat of terrorism in the United States.

Barbara O’Connor, Communication Studies, was quoted: in the Jan. 11 Sacramento News & Review on Gov. Schwarzenegger’s commitment to the environment; in the Jan. 7 Sacramento Bee on the state’s support of high-speed Internet; in the Jan. 15 San Jose Mercury News on Nancy Pelosi as a role model for women; in the Jan. 6 Stockton Record on Gov. Schwarzenegger’s inaugural speech and in the Jan. 5 Pleasanton Valley Times on Jerry McNerney’s need to balance his progressive platform with his diverse constituency. She was interviewed on Dec. 28 on KOVR Channel 13 about John Garamendi’s response to the DUI arrest of his daughter, Ashley.

Ayad Al-Qazzaz, Sociology, was interviewed on Dec. 29 on KCRA Channel 3 and KXTV Channel 10 about the execution of Saddam Hussein and on Jan. 10 and Jan. 14 on KCRA Channel 3 about President Bush’s plans for the war in Iraq.

Tim Hodson, Center for California Studies, was quoted: in the Jan. 9 Sacramento Bee on raises given to employees of Assembly Speaker Fabian Nuñez; in the Jan. 3 San Mateo Times, Alameda Times Star and Pasadena Star News on whether bipartisanship will become a reality in California government; and in the Jan. 9 Oakland Tribune and Fremont Argus on Don Perata’s appointment of Wilma Chan to the California Medical Assistance Commission.

Robert Waste, Public Policy and Administration, was quoted in the Jan. 18 Sacramento News & Review on the power shift in Sacramento government.

Nancy Shulock, Institute for Higher Education Leadership & Policy, was quoted in the Jan. 10 Santa Rosa Press Democrat and the Jan. 11 Visalia Times Delta on the rate of Latino high school graduates going college and its effect on the economy.


Recognition

Maureen Smith, Kinesiology and Health Science, has been elected to the office of president for the North American Society for Sports History.
