Sacramento State's Sacramento/Black Art of Dance presents "A Tribute to Katherine Dunham: The Legacy Continues . . ." at the University Dancespace, Solano Hall 1010, through March 4.

Sacramento/Black Art of Dance offers the second installment in their year-long tribute to and exploration into the life and work of the late Ms. Katherine Dunham, 1909 - 2006, one of the matriarchs and pioneers of American modern dance. Directed by Linda S. Goodrich, artistic director and chair of the Department of Theatre and Dance at Sacramento State, this concert offers a range of choreographic styles found within the legacy of the Dunham tradition.

The performance features a world premiere choreographed by Goodrich in tribute to the late musician James Brown, titled “Live from Beech Island.”

Guest choreographer Keith Williams, former Dunham company member and Master Certified Dunham teacher presents, “Grandma’s Hands” and Nathan Jones, resident choreographer and associate artistic director, presents a work dedicated to the spiritual focus of Ms. Dunham, with music by his late father, Elvin Jones. Shauna Segler and Nzinga Woods showcase works that are influenced by the Dunham aesthetic.

There are also guest performances by Sacramento area high school dance companies, 34th Street Dance Company from Sacramento High School and JNP Dance Company from Sacramento’s Visual and Performing Arts High School.

Performances began on Thursday, Feb. 22 and will continue this week at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 28 and Thursday, March 1; at 8 p.m., Friday and Saturday, Mar. 2 and 3; and at 2 p.m., Sunday, March 4.
