State's Sacramento/Black Art of Dance presents "A Tribute to Katherine
Dunham: The Legacy Continues . . ." at the University Dancespace, Solano
Hall 1010, through March 4.

Art of Dance offers the second installment in their year-long tribute to and
exploration into the life and work of the late Ms. Katherine Dunham, 1909 -
2006, one of the matriarchs and pioneers of American modern dance. Directed
by Linda S. Goodrich, artistic director and chair of the Department of Theatre
and Dance at Sacramento State, this concert offers a range of choreographic
styles found within the legacy of the Dunham tradition.
The performance features
a world premiere choreographed by Goodrich in tribute to the late musician James
Brown, titled “Live from Beech Island.”
Guest choreographer Keith
Williams, former Dunham company member and Master Certified Dunham teacher presents,
“Grandma’s Hands” and Nathan Jones, resident choreographer
and associate artistic director, presents a work dedicated to the spiritual
focus of Ms. Dunham, with music by his late father, Elvin Jones. Shauna Segler
and Nzinga Woods showcase works that are influenced by the Dunham aesthetic.
There are also guest performances
by Sacramento area high school dance companies, 34th Street Dance Company from
Sacramento High School and JNP Dance Company from Sacramento’s Visual
and Performing Arts High School.
Performances began
on Thursday, Feb. 22 and will continue this week at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, Feb.
28 and Thursday, March 1; at 8 p.m., Friday and Saturday, Mar. 2 and 3; and
at 2 p.m., Sunday, March 4. At 1:30 p.m., March 4, prior to the Sunday matinee,
Halifu Osumare will read from her new book, The Africanist Aesthetic of
Global Hip Hop: Power Moves. There will be a book signing after the concert.
Tickets are $12 general;
$10 students/seniors; $8 children. All tickets are $8 for the Wednesday and
Thursday shows. Group prices are $10 each for 10 for more.
