Yarn,
video, digital media, steel, water, concrete and wood – together with
more traditional photography, acrylic and oil paintings on canvas – are
just some of the media on display through March 1 at the annual "Student
Award Show" at the Robert Else Gallery. This juried exhibition highlights
the breadth of talent and creativity of the University's undergraduate and graduate
art students.
Students were eligible
to submit up to 3 works for inclusion in the show; a total of 55 works were
selected. The panel of judges was interested in seeing work in any media, two
dimensional or three dimensional, which showed considerable investment of time
and effort. They were also seeking work that has obvious visual tension and
expressive character. And they were drawn to art that showed clarity of intent
regarding both technique and form. The result is an eclectic mix. Tightly packed
within the small gallery, surrealistic landscapes are juxtaposed with concrete
sculpture and flickering video monitors.
Scholarship awards
were given to both undergraduate and graduate students, as well as a number
of certificates of quality awarded to students who are ineligible for scholarship.
The largest prize, the Increase Robinson Memorial Fellowship, in the amount
of $1,000 for each winner, was awarded to graduate art students Omar Arason,
Doug Browe, Kevin Flory and Ryan Nelson. Sally Worthing, Lan Liu and Pat Mills
received certificate awards.
Bobby Lukas received
the Frederick M. Peyser Prize, awarded to an undergraduate working in a two-dimensional
medium. The Raymond W. and Joyce Witt Scholarships were given to Erin Billingsley,
Melissa Silva and Kari Breese. Undergraduate certificates were awarded to Reyna
Martinez, Megan Scott, and Jennifer Claudio.
The Else Gallery
