Student Spotlight

The Institute of Transportation Engineers Student Chapter won a regional grant to collect parking generation data at a multiplex movie theatre in Sacramento. The Sacramento State Chapter, along with the students at Portland State, collected the data so engineers can better model the rate at which parking demand is generated at multiplex theaters during the peak holiday season. The grant was awarded in early November and students collected the data in late November and December. The final report and data were made available in late January.

Geography major Ronnie Caluza was awarded a 2005 Transportation Planning Scholarship from the California Transportation Foundation and the California Department of Transportation Planning Staff. Caluza received one of only two scholarships given in the statewide competition open to undergraduate and graduate students volunteering or interning at Caltrans.

Five students in Robin Datel’s “Themes in World Geography” class were honored at WalkSacramento’s annual dinner Feb. 16. Jason Howard, Sarah LaChaussee, Paul Lucas, Myra Sanchez and Stephanie Truscott’s brochures for guided walks in the Sacramento region were selected by a panel put together by the local walking advocacy group.


Recognition

Ted Lascher, Public Policy and Administration, had his article "Constituency Size and Incumbent Safety: A Reexamination" selected as the co-winner of the 2006 award for Best Article published in Political Research Quarterly during 2005. The article was based in part on data from the California Elections Data Archive which is a joint project of the Center for California Studies, the Institute for Social Research and the California Secretary of State.

Scholarship

Pia Wong, Janet Hecsh and Karen Benson, Bilingual/Multicultural Education, have created the Sacramento Teachers' Network Leadership Institute. It is affiliated with TeachersNetwork.org, a group dedicated to bringing the teachers' voice to the policymaking process. Sac-TNLI is supporting nine fellows this year, teachers at an Equity Network Professional Development School partnered with Sacramento State. Fellows spend the year conducting research on issues related to teaching low-income and culturally and linguistically diverse students. They also connect with policy-makers and policy-shapers in our region. Sac-TNLI is supported in part by a federal Teacher Quality Enhancement grant and by the Holmes Partnership Group.

Bruce K. Bayley, Family and Consumer Sciences, co-authored an article entitled "Parent Socialization, Family Economic Well-being, and Toddlers Cognitive Development in Rural Paraguay." The article will be published in the summer edition of the Journal for Research in Childhood Education.

Cici Mattiuzzi, Engineering and Computer Science, had her new book The Ultimate Career Planning Manual for Engineers and Computer Scientists published by Kendall/Hunt in January. It is on sale in the Hornet Bookstore and on Amazon.

Kyle Lemoi, Theatre and Dance, designed lights for the Martin Luther King Jr. Theatre Project "And the Dream Goes On” a celebration in song, word and dance. The show was produced by California Musical Theatre in association with Celebration Arts and the Department of Theatre and Dance.

Rafiqul Bhuyan, Business Administration, had his coauthored article “Financial Restatement and Its Impact on Stock Prices: Evidence from the U.S. Financial Markets published in the forthcoming Southwest Business and Economics Journal. His co-authored article “Microfinance and Its Role in Affecting Decision Making of Loan Use and Empowerment of Women: A Comparative Study on BRAC and Grameen Bank in Bangladesh” will appear in the Journal of Insurance and Risk Management. And his co-authored article “Market Efficiency in Emerging Stock Market: Evidence from Bangladesh” was published in the Proceedings of the International Conference in Business and Finance 2005.

Dave Zuckerman, Communication Studies, chaired the panel "Comparison, Media and Change in Intercultural Communication" and presented a response to the panel "Context and Communication: Intercultural Contexts" at the 77th Annual Convention of the Western States Communication Association, Feb. 17-21, in Palm Springs.

In the News

Cici Mattiuzzi, Engineering and Computer Science, was quoted in the Feb. 10 issue of the Sacramento Business Journal on the exploding demand for engineers and computer scientists. She and S. K. Ramesh also had an article on the demand for engineers and computer scientists printed in The Sacramento Bee on Feb. 19.
