Companies hot for Sac State engineering
and computer science students

The economy may be cooling off, but the need for engineers is heating up, especially in Northern California. Sacramento State’s College of Engineering and Computer Science is preparing to host the largest hiring event in campus history.
Representatives from 130 engineering or engineering-related companies will be on campus from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday, March 10 in the University Union Ballroom for the annual College of Engineering and Computer Science career fair. A series of career seminars from various companies such as PG&E, Intel, Caltrans and AT&T will be presented throughout the day in the Union as well.
“The demand for engineers and computer scientists has been largely unaffected by the current economic disruption,” says CiCi Mattiuzzi, director of career services for the College of Engineering and Computer Science. “Companies scheduled to attend have more than 3,500 job openings.”
The greatest demand is for civil engineering candidates, she says. A total of 90 companies are seeking graduates with a civil engineering major, 55 are hoping to hire construction management majors, 47 companies have openings for mechanical engineers, 44 are seeking electrical and electronic engineering majors and 37 are hiring computer engineering majors. There are 32 openings for computer science majors.
Mattiuzzi says the overall labor market for technical professionals is strong and growing throughout the region and the state because of expanding areas of business, population growth, baby boomer retirements, growing demand for infrastructure, new government regulations and new technology requirements.
“Sacramento is a particularly good market because it has an excellent mix of government and private sector employers,” she says.
The fair is open to College of Engineering and Computer Science students and alumni.
