The theory of human rights and the reality of pain and suffering will be discussed at two lectures sponsored by Sacramento State’s Center for Practical and Professional Ethics.
Fred D. Miller Jr., a professor of philosophy and the executive director of the Social Philosophy and Policy Center, Bowling Green State University, Ohio, will discuss whether Plato and Aristotle, who are considered to be the fathers of human rights, really had a conception of the rights of persons, 3 p.m., Thursday, March 6, in the University Union’s Hinde Auditorium.
Ben Rich, of the Schools of Medicine and of Law, University of California, Davis, will discuss the ethical implications of medicine's failure to competently and consistently provide pain relief to patients, 3 p.m., Wednesday, March 12, in the University Union’s California Suite.
The Center for Practical and Professional Ethics was founded in 2005 by the Philosophy Department as a complement to the department’s teaching and scholarly focus on ethics.
