Student Spotlight

Stephanie Taylor, Studio Art graduate student, will lecture on public art on April 27 at the Crocker Art Museum and conduct a tour of public art in Sacramento on April 29 as part of the series "Crocker Contemporaries." For more information visit www.crockerartmuseum.org.

Recognition

Nancy Fox, Director of Transportation and Parking, was re-elected to the 2006 Board of Directors of the California Public Parking Association as secretary and of the Sacramento Transportation Management Association as treasurer.

Grants

Katherine McReynolds, Chemistry, has been awarded a three-year $150,000 grant from the National Institutes of Health for "Synthesis of Novel Water-Soluble Glycodendrimers as Anti-HIV Agents."

Scholarship

Jordan Halgas, College of Business Administration, gave a presentation to the Sacramento Estate Planning Council that provided an overview of same-sex marriage, domestic partnership laws, and the implications that same-sex marriage poses for employers and employees.

Stephen Kaltenbach, Art emeritus, will lecture on "his art and process" at the Crocker Art Museum on March 23 and conduct tours of his studio on March 25 as part of the series "Crocker Contemporaries." For more information visit www.crockerartmuseum.org.

Mark Stoner, Communication Studies, is a visiting fellow in the School of Education, Communication and Language Sciences at the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, United Kingdom. He is doing research related to instructional communication theory and practice and acting as consultant for developing faculty.

Sherrie Carinci, Teacher Education, presented "Inclusion of Gender in Instructional Teaching Practices" at the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education national conference in San Diego on Jan. 31.

Elizabeth Hanson-Smith, emeritus English, recently concluded a two-year stint as Coordinator of the Electronic Village Online, an online distance learning experience organized by volunteers in the international TESOL professional association. This year’s sessions served almost 1,500 participants from 65 countries globally, including Senegal, Mongolia, Paraguay, Slovenia, and Australia.

Ann Weldy, English emerita, gave a lecture on the history of pulp paperback publishing in the mid-20th Century to an audience at Sonoma State University on Feb. 21. The lecture was part of a series for Women's and Gay Studies.

Bill Owen, Communication Studies, read haiku and haibun at Barnes and Noble Bookstore in Birdcage Mall in Citrus Heights on Feb. 25.

Joseph A. Palermo, History, was interviewed on KFBK Radio 1530 on Feb. 20 about Presidents' Day.

David J. Leon, Chicano Studies/Ethnic Studies, was quoted in the Lodi News-Sentinel on Feb. 11 on the rise of Latino gangs in Lodi.

Eric Bull, Teacher Education, was quoted in the Feb. 17 issue of the Sacramento Business Journal about his involvement with the Resource Area For Teaching (RAFT) program opening in Sacramento this summer.

Duane Campbell, Bilingual/Multicultural Education, is quoted in the article "Labor Pains" in the March 2006 issue of Prosper magazine. Campbell also maintains a web log on issues related to education and politics at www.choosingdemocracy.blogspot.com
