Debate team takes state championship

The Sacramento State debate team was named the Policy Debate State champion in the Novice Division during a tournament at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, Feb. 27-March 1.

The two-student team of junior Katie Rupp and senior Gerald Clift won its division after a 5-1 run in the preliminaries. They went on to win unanimous decisions in the quarter, semi-quarter and final rounds, defeating top seeded USC.

The Novice Division is for students in their first year of debate. This is the first state championship in that division for Sacramento State, says debate coach and communication studies professor Kristen Tudor.

Sacramento State will host the Western Novice and Junior Varsity tournament Friday and Saturday, March 6 and 7, in Sacramento State’s Mendocino Hall.
