The Women’s Resource Center’s annual celebration of Women’s Herstory Month continues through March.
Events on campus began March 3 with an open-mic forum called, “In Our Own Words: Honoring Our Sheroes.” Members of the University community read works of their own or of their favorite female author.
On March 5, the all-woman comedy show, “Women Who Kick Comedy Butt,” was presented in the University Union Ballroom.
Other events this month include a student panel presentation on gay and lesbian politics at 3 p.m., Tuesday, March 10, in Lassen Hall, Room 3005; an International Women’s Day celebration at noon, Wednesday, March 11, in the University Union’s Redwood Room; and poetry reading and discourse with immigrant activist Felicia Martinez at 3 p.m., Thursday, March 12, in the Multicultural Center, Library 1010. “Women’s Herstory Month is a celebration of women and a springboard for highlighting women’s issues,” says Dr. Patricia Grady, Women’s Resource Center Director.
Although Woman’s History Month is celebrated in March the WRC has several women’s advocacy programs scheduled in April to observe Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
The center will cosponsor the international demonstration against violence called “Take Back the Night.”
“Sexual assault and intimate partner violence are serious issues, and Sac State’s demonstration helps to raise sensitivity toward women’s safety issues,” Grady says.
On Friday, April 10, WRC will host the fourth annual “Women Mentoring Women” conference which will include female CEOs, politicians and doctors, among other occupations. “This is a unique and exclusive opportunity for the Sacramento State female community to enrich their personal and professional development,” Grady says.
