Professional Activities

Student Scholarship

Pang Moua, Biological Sciences, won first place in the 21st Annual Student Research Local Competition hosted by the Office of Research Administration on March 5. Her topic was “The Effects of Datisica Glomerata on Two Breast Cancer Cell Lines, MDA-MB 231 and BT-474."

Student Recognition

Dante and Dominic Morris took first and second place in the Men's 62kg class at the Pacific Weightlifting Association Championships on Feb. 11 in San Francisco. John Redito took fifth place and club president and assistant coach Fernando Rodriquez took sixth place in the 85kg class. Head coach and graduate student Kathy Redcher-Bowling won the women's 69kgs class. Ben Claridad recently took second place in the 105kgs class at the Sacramento High Junior Open. He will be representing Sacramento State in the Collegiate National Championships in Reno, April 14 - 15.

Scholarship

Hellen Lee-Keller, English, led a discussion on the film Bittersweet Roots: The Chinese in California's Heartland on March 10 at the Guild Gallery, sponsored by the Asian American Studies Program and the Office of Community Collaboration.

Laurel Zucker, Music, gave a concert/lecture for the 2007 San Francisco College Music Society Conference on "Premieres for Solo Flute from the Baroque Era to the Present" on March 3 at San Francisco State University.

Celeste Roseberry-McKibbin, Speech Pathology and Audiology, was invited to give the following presentations: "Nonbiased assessment of and pre-referral intervention strategies for ELL students with potential language disorders" at the October meeting of the Special School District of St. Louis County, St. Louis; "Language therapy with bilingual students: Practical strategies and materials," at the August meeting of the San Francisco Unified School District and "Practical strategies for intervention with ELL students with language-learning disabilities," in June at the University of the Pacific Summer Colloquium series.

Mary Mackey, English, delivered the following lectures: "Poetry Contests, Honors, and Prizes: Winning Your Way to Publication," at the San Francisco Writers Conference; "The Art of Film Adaptation," at the Capital Film Arts Alliance; and "Combining Romance with Comedy, History, and Other Genres," at the Silicon Valley Romance Writers Conference. She also read poetry from her new collection, Breaking the Fever, at the Nevada County Poetry Series and read selections from her new novel, The Notorious Mrs. Winston, at St. Mary's College, Moraga.

Ernie Hills, Music, was interviewed on Feb. 13 on KXJZ radio about the symphonic scores from the Sacramento Symphony being moved to the University Library.

Nancy Shulock, Institute for Higher Education Leadership and Policy, was interviewed on Feb. 7 on KXJZ radio about her community college study. She was quoted in the Feb. 3 Modesto Bee on the low rate of completion for California community college students.

Dennis Tootelian, Center for Small Business, was quoted in the Feb. 1 Sacramento Bee on small businesses' use of family and friends as unpaid workers.

Irene Bersola-Nguyen, Child Development was quoted in the Feb. 7 Sacramento Bee on a study that suggests bilingual brains stay sharper longer.

Timothy Hodson, Center for California Studies, was quoted in the Jan. 3 West County Times, Vallejo Times Herald and Monterey County Herald and in the Jan. 14 San Bernadino Sun and Modesto Bee on bipartisanship in the California legislature; and in the Jan. 16 San Gabriel Valley Daily Tribune on Gov. Schwarzenegger's proposed health care plan.

Tony Platt, Social Work Emeritus, was quoted in the Feb. 15 Sacramento Bee on his study of Charles Goethe's role in the eugenics movement.

Barbara O'Connor, Communication Studies, was quoted: in the Feb. 7 San Francisco Bay Guardian on the scandal surrounding San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom; in the Jan. 16 Los Angeles Times on the growing trend of younger politicians being elected to office; in the Jan. 7 Contra Costa Times and San Bernadino Sun on the governor's decision to eliminate fees for installing high-speed Internet conduit along state rights of way; in the Dec. 15 San Bernadino Sun on the granting of lucrative contracts in San Bernadino County; in the Jan. 18 Santa Rosa Press Democrat on Rep. Lynn Woolsey's role as an anti-war representative; in the Jan. 20 Contra Costa Times, Alameda Times Star and Pleasanton Valley Times on the proposed bill to ban spanking; and in the Jan. 21 Fremont Argus, San Mateo Times and Oakland Tribune on the suggested link between Gov. Schwarzenegger's recent injury and his improved communications skills.

Robert Mogull, Business Statistics Emeritus, was quoted in the Jan. 16 Modesto Bee on California's rising poverty level.

Kimberly Gordon Biddle, Child Development , was quoted in the Jan. 19 Santa Rosa Press Democrat and the Jan. 20 San Mateo Times and Hayward Daily Review on the proposed bill to ban spanking of children younger than 4.
