The importance of leadership and service will be the topic when Maya Soetoro-Ng, sister of President Barack Obama, speaks on campus at 2 p.m., Tuesday, March 17, in the University Union Ballroom.
Ng, who was born in Jakarta, Indonesia, is a high school teacher at a school for girls in Hawaii. She teaches world cultures, U.S. history and the Constitution and Peacemakers, a course she designed on the power of nonviolence. She is also a lecturer at the University of Hawaii's College of Education where she teaches multi-cultural education and the history of education.
Ng was invited to speak by Boatamo Mosupyoe, director of Sacramento State’s Cooper-Woodson College Enhancement Program. She and Ng are board members of Global Majority, a non-profit organization promoting non-violent conflict resolution.
The lecture is sponsored by the CWC, UNIQUE Programs and the Departments of Pan African Studies, Asian American Studies and Ethnic Studies.
