Professional Activities

Students

The State Hornet won an Honorable Mention in the Associated Collegiate Press "Best in Show" competition March 11 in Portland, Oregon. Representatives from 100 student newspapers attended the conference, and each publication was able to submit one issue to compete against other publications in its division. The State Hornet, was recognized for its Feb. 14 issue in the 4-year university weekly broadsheet category.

Jason Chappelle, Hannah Heuseveldt, Bobby Lukas, and Carey Shaw, Art, presented their work in a recent exhibition titled "Explorations," at the Witt Gallery, Kadema Hall, January 29 – February 2.

Meenal S. Abhyankar, Chemistry, Catalina Alvarez, Social Work, Ryan Bibler, History, Elizabeth Glidewell, Biology, Erika Holland, Biology, Lusi Martin, Food and Nutrition, Pang Moua, Biology, Kim Nelson, Biology, will be competing in the Statewide Student Research Competition, sponsored by California State University, May 4 - 5, at CSU Dominguez Hill. CSU sponsors the system-wide competition to promote excellence in undergraduate and graduate research and creative activity by recognizing outstanding student accomplishments.

Matt Easley, Kinesiology and Health Science, (ARC this semester) has been awarded the Soldier of the Year honor for outstanding service in the armed forces. The athletic training student is a combat medic in the Army Reserves. He was honored at a ceremony in Florida, February 6 – 12. He is also in nominated for Soldier of the Year within the medical department of the armed forces.

Loren Redwood, Social Work, currently a Ph.D. candidate in American Studies at Washington State University will have her article titled, "Strong-Arming Exploitable Labor: The State and Immigrant Workers in the Post-Katrina Gulf Coast" published by the Social Justice Journal; her article titled,"The Rebuilding of a Tourist Industry: Immigrant Labor Exploitation in Post-Katrina New Orleans" has been accepted for publication by Palgrave Macmillan. The text is tentatively entitled, "Seeking Higher Ground: The Race, Public Policy and Hurricane Katrina Crisis Reader.”

Scholarship

David Leon, Ethnic Studies and Serna Center, and Carlos Nevarez , Education, presented their paper, "Models of Leadership Institutes for Increasing the Number of Top Latino Administrators in Higher Education," at the Second Annual American Association of Hispanics in Higher Education Conference, in Costa Mesa, California, March 9 – 11.

Edward Baranowski, Foreign Languages, published an article titled, "The Spanish Future Perfect habr cantado: From Subjunctive to Indicative?" in the Bulletin of Spanish Studies, in January.

Gale Justin, Philosophy, delivered an invited reply to a paper by Charles Griswold, Boston University, on "Plato and Forgiveness as a Virtue" at the twelfth Annual Arizona Colloquium in Ancient Philosophy, University of Arizona, Feb. 16-18.

The Center for Collaborative Policy hosted a focus group, Feb. 5, as part of a research project being conducted on behalf of the Resources Legacy Fund Foundation and Stanford University’s Wood Institute of the Environment for use in the development of a new Center for Ocean Solutions. The focus group questions focused on ways institutions create change and develop and implement solutions, and how expert knowledge, research and monitoring data can inform management and policy. Lisa Beutler and Susan Sherry, The Center for Collaborative Policy, joined with several key government officials to discuss possible approaches.

Barbara O’Connor, Communications Studies, was elected secretary of the Board of Directors of the California Emerging Technology Fund Board of Directors. The fund is responsible for jump starting broadband usage in California and will begin dispensing funds in the second quarter of 2007.

Robert G. Mogull, Business Emeritus, has published the following studies in professional journals: “State Poverty: The Case of California” in the Journal of Social Service Research, No. 1, 2006; “Hispanic-American Poverty” in the Journal of Applied Business Research, Summer 2005; “Standard Error of the Mean: A Better Presentation” in Mathematics Teacher, May 2006; “Urban Impact Upon Statewide Statistics: An Example from New York Poverty” in Journal of Business & Economic Studies, Fall 2006; and “California Poverty Without Los Angeles” in Journal of Applied Business Research, 4th Quarter, 2006, The Sacramento Bee published a political column quoting information from the studies: “State Poverty: The Case of California” and “California Poverty Without Los Angeles,” on January 14; his letter to the editor of the Sacramento Bee, was published on September 15, 2005, titled “Measures of Poverty.”

Luis Rios, Jr., Foreign Languages, is an affiliated member of the American Academy of Spanish based in New York City, a branch of the Spanish Royal Academy (Real Academia Espaola), his current project is creating a list of idiomatic expressions for a major Spanish language television network. The list will be transmitted in major cities nationwide via the Spanish language network.

Karlos Santos-Coy, Student Activities, and The Multicultural Center worked with student organizations and departments to create a single calendar of Black History Month Events. The calendar, called "UMOJA" The Spirit of Unity, included 35 events planned for February and provided information on guest speakers, theatre, music, and comedy performances, spoken word and poetry readings, documentary films, interactive discussions about past and current issues effecting the African American and Global communities.

Bill Owen, Communication Studies, has published a book of haiku, senryu and haibun entitled haiku notebook (ISBN 978-1-4303-0557-6) available at Lulu.com and major bookstores.

Tom Knutson, Communication Studies, has been informed that the Bangkok University Academic Review will publish his paper, "A Scale to Measure Thai Rhetorical Sensitivity." The paper is co-authored by Val Smith, Boondharika Kaweewong, and Phan Datthuyawat, Communication Studies, and Rosechongporn Komolsevin, Chair of the Doctoral Program in Interpersonal Communication at Bangkok University, Thailand. The study examines the close relationship between rhetorical sensitivity and communication effectiveness. Knutson is spending the semester break in Thailand conducting research and consulting at Bangkok University and Kasetsart University.

Barbara O’Connor, Communication Studies, was quoted: in the Feb. 10 New York Times about the similarities between Gov. Schwarzenegger and New York governor Eliot Spitzer; in the Jan. 20 Fremont Argus about why the public reacted negatively to the proposed ban on spanking; in the Jan. 1 Torrance Daily Breeze about the 910 new California laws signed into affect before an unusually high numbers of legislators were termed out; in the Jan. 18 Los Angeles Times and in the Jan. 22 Lodi News-Sentinel about Gov. Schwarzenegger’s improved communication skills after his injury; in the Jan. 27 San Bernardino Sun about Gov. Schwarzenegger’s effort to provide health care to all Californians; in the Feb. 3 San Francisco Chronicle about the strong political force tribes play in California politics; in the Jan. 26 Orange County Register about the reasons why legislative committee chairs obtain more campaign contributions; in the Feb. 14 Santa Rosa Press Democrat about the public’s role in driving the Democrat’s official rebuke of the Iraq war and in the Feb. 9 Sacramento Business Journal about executive changes in KCRA’s news room; and was interviewed on KFBK 1530 on Feb. 22 and on KCRA Channel 3 on Feb. 23 about Americans’ fascination with celebrity news.

Tim Hodson, Center for California Studies, was quoted: in the Jan. 15 Woodland Hills Daily News and the Jan. 16 Pasadena Star News about the political ramifications of charging taxes or fees to provide health care for all Californians and in the Jan. 3 Oroville Mercury-Register about bipartisan support for health care reform.

Nancy Shulock, Institute for Higher Education and Leadership Policy, was quoted in the Feb. 2 Oakland Tribune, San Gabriel Valley Daily Tribune and Davis Enterprise, the Feb. 3 Monterey County Herald and Santa Cruz Sentinel, and the Feb. 4 Hayward Sunday Review about a report she authored regarding completion rates of community college students.

Emir Macari, Engineering and Computer Science, was quoted in the Feb. 2 Sacramento Business Journal about the high demand in the job market for qualified engineers and others in related fields.

Dennis Tootelian, Business Administration, was quoted in the Feb. 9 Sacramento Business Journal about consumers being accustomed to name changes in the financial services industry and was interviewed on KCRA Channel 3 on Feb. 21 about marketing technological toys to children.

Rita Cameron-Wedding, Women’s Studies, was quoted in the Jan. 21 Alameda Times Star and the Jan. 22 San Jose Mercury-News about the importance of eliminating racial biases.

Robert Waste, Public Policy and Administration, was quoted in the Feb. 20 Sacramento Bee about campaign finance reform for those running for office in the City of Sacramento.

Beth Kivel, Recreation and Leisure Studies, was quoted in the Feb. 22 Sacramento Bee about her and her students collecting oral accounts of those who helped shape the region’s leisure and recreation amenities.

Tony Platt, Social Work, was interviewed on KCRA Channel 3 on Feb. 15 about Charles Goethe’s background as a eugenics advocate.

Tim Fong, Ethnic Studies, was interviewed on Capital Public Radio KXJZ on Feb. 19 about Congressman Robert Matsui’s political career.
