Addressing diversity
in healthcare
A free symposium on “Increasing Diversity in the Healthcare Professions”
will be held from 8 a.m. to noon, Friday, April 21 in the University Union Redwood
Room. The symposium will address the challenge many hospitals and health providers
in California and throughout the country face in the lack of diversity in the
healthcare professions. Participants will learn about current obstacles to diversity
and recognized practices used to increase diversity in the healthcare industry.
CE units are available.
The symposium is sponsored by the Discrimination Research Center, the College
of Health and Human Services and the Serna Center. Continental breakfast will

Book talk series
The Friends of the Sacramento State Library/Emeritus Association Book Group
is holding a series of monthly book discussions. The next discussion will be
at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, April 20 where they will discuss Paris to the Moon

CalPERS election
The California Public Employees' Retirement System, CalPERS, will hold an election
for the state member representative on the CalPERS Board of Administration in
August. Eligible active state members of CalPERS will have an opportunity to
vote for one candidate on the ballot. Nomination petitions must be filed no
later than 5 p.m., March 24.

takes awards
The State Hornet received 18 honors at the annual competition of the California
College Media Association in Los Angeles.

Associated Collegiate Press' national Newspaper of the Year competition.
Teaching
the research paper
Writing Across the Curriculum invites full and part-time instructors to a campuswide
workshop on teaching the research paper from noon to 1:15 p.m., Wednesday, April
12 in the University Union Auburn Room. The interactive workshop will focus
on topics such as creative alternatives to the traditional research paper, motivating
students to research and write, teaching research as a process, and handling
the paper load.
Administrative
review
Every five years Sacramento State solicits systematic feedback about its administrators.
Dean Marilyn Hopkins of the College of Health and Human Services is being evaluated
this year. Around March 20, faculty and staff who know Dean Hopkins will receive
an e-mail from the IDEA Center at Kansas State University asking them to fill
out an on-line survey.

Middle
East lecture
The Iranian and Middle Eastern Studies Center will present a lecture on "Behavioral
Impediments to the Development of Democracy in the Middle East" from 1:30
to 3 p.m., Thursday, March 23, in the University Union Hinde Auditorium. The
talk will feature Mansour Farhang, politics professor at Bennington College.

World Language
Day
The Department of Foreign Languages will hold its fourth annual World Language
Day from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, April 29 in the Library Quad and Eureka
and Mariposa Halls. The free event will feature food, vendors, workshops, plays,
dances, music, hands-on activities and more. Free parking will be available.
HR workshops
offered
Human Resources will again offer a series of workshops for employees this semester
as part of its Professional Development and Leadership Program.
One is a system-wide offering titled "How to Resolve Ethical Dilemmas in
the Office" from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, April 4 in the University
Union Ballroom. The workshop, led by Nan DeMars, will take a serious look at
issues of judgment, loyalty, harassment and confidentiality, first touching
on the workplace on a broad scale, then narrowing the discussion to real-world
situations that directly impact employees and supervisors. The target audiences
for this seminar are staff and supervisors (non HEERA).
The President's Office will sponsor a select number of scholarships to our staff

Night of
cultures
Epsilon Sigma Rho, Inc and Unique will present Multi-Cultural Night III from
7:30 to 10:30 p.m., Thursday April 27. The free event will promote multicultural
awareness on campus and in the community with performances from Greek and cultural
organizations, and individuals representing a spectrum of different ethnicities
and cultures.
