Student Spotlight

More than 50 Kinesiology and Health Science students attended the California Association for Health, Physical Education, and Recreation and Dance state conference in Garden Grove March 9-12.


Recognition

Laurel Heffernan has been named interim dean of the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. The appointment is effective July 1. Heffernan served as Acting Dean in fall of 2004 during Dean Marion O’Leary’s assignment in University Advancement. A search for a permanent dean is underway and is expected to be completed before the end of the fall semester.

Sacramento State received two systemwide awards at the 2006 Annual CSU QI Symposium on Feb. 23 in Los Angeles. The awards are presented to CSU campuses for individual and team-based Quality Improvement leadership efforts, projects and innovations. Mike Lee, associate vice president and dean for Academic Programs, received the CSU QI Champion award for promoting improvement efforts on campus. The award was based on his leadership in planning, communicating and supporting implementation of the Destination 2010 initiative. The CSU QI Function Chair award went to Dirk Ruthrauff, associate director of the Student Health Center, for his work as chair of the systemwide Student Health Services function group. Under his leadership, the SHS group has become one of the most productive function groups in the CSU.

Barbara O’Connor, Communication Studies, has been selected as Verizon Communications’ representative on the governing board of the California Public Utilities Commission’s California Emerging Technology Fund. The fund was created to achieve ubiquitous access to broadband and advanced services in California through the use of emerging technologies by the year 2010.

Bruce Drummond, Kinesiology and Health Science, was selected for the 2006 City of Woodland Community Service Award.

Robert Halseth, Music, has been selected by the California Band Directors Association to conduct the 2008 California All-State High School Symphonic Band at this year's All-State Band Convention in Fresno on Feb. 18. Halseth was also presented the Guahan Award by the acting governor of Guam for his efforts as guest conductor, clinician and chief adjudicator for the second year at the Tumon Bay Band Festival in Guam, Feb. 27-March 3.

Santos Torres, Social Work, has been appointed director of the Serna Center. He assumes the administrative responsibility for carrying out the missions of the Center. Named after the late Professors Joe and Isabel Hernandez-Serna, the Center sponsors research studies, conferences and workshops, lectures and other programming with a focus on Latino issues.

Scholarship

Bill Leach, Center for Collaborative Policy, has had his article "Public Involvement in USDA Forest Service Policymaking: A Literature Review" published in the January/February 2006 issue of the Journal of Forestry.

Sue Cote, Criminal Justice, co-presented her paper "Examining Same-Sex Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault: Methodological Issues that Arise When Researching Sensitive Subjects," at the annual meetings of the Western Society of Criminology, Feb. 23-25 in Seattle. She and Laurie Kubicek, also Criminal Justice, co-presented "Student Advising for the Division of Criminal Justice: Providing Students Enough Information to March at Commencement" at the annual meetings of the American Society of Criminology in Toronto, Nov. 15-19.

Shannon Datwyler, Biological Sciences, had her co-authored paper entitled "Genetic Variation in Hemp and Marijuana (Cannabis sativa L.) According to Amplified Frangment Length Polymorphisms" published in the Journal of Forensic Science. It surveyed genetic differences between drug and fiber plants, and points to the potential uses of DNA-based markers for identifying and tracking marijuana seizures by drug enforcement agencies.

Jim Hernandez, Criminal Justice, recently testified as a gang expert in the Superior Courts of Alameda and Santa Clara counties.

Cherryl Smith, Dan Melzer, Christy Drewry and Gwen Hutchinson, all English, presented the panel "Writing Centers and WAC: Making Connections" at the Northern California Writing Centers Association conference on March 4.

Robert Halseth, Music, guest-conducted the Cavitt Junior High Wind Symphony at their appearance at the California Music Educators Association State Conference in Sacramento on March 9. He also served as a guest speaker for the career day at Jesuit High School on March 10.

William A. Dorman, Government, is co-author of a bibliography, International Reporting by the American News Media: A Bibliography of Scholarship and Criticism, 1990-2001, for the Global Journalism Program of the Center for War, Peace and the News Media at Boston University. A grant from the Rockefeller Brothers Fund supported much of the research. It is a companion effort to a bibliography Dorman co-compiled and edited in 1988 dealing with the American press, the Soviet Union, nuclear weapons and arms control. The co-authors intend to produce a third volume focusing on the U.S. news media's international reporting since Sep. 11, 2001.

Dave Zuckerman, Communication Studies, presented a workshop called "Advocacy for Student Leaders" at the 11th annual meeting of the California Higher Education Student Summit on March 6th in Sacramento. Other presenters at the summit included CSU Chancellor Charles Reed.

Roy Dixon, Chemistry, co-authored an article, “Determination of Levoglucosan in Atmospheric Aerosols Using High Performance Liquid Chromatography with Aerosol Charge Detection,” that will be published in the Journal of Chromatography, A edition, this month.
