Sac State’s summer programs offer children a variety of fun courses.
Attention parents: when it comes to finding something for children to do during summer that’s entertaining and worthwhile, look no farther—Sacramento State’s annual vacation program offers all manner of fun, safe and, yes, educational activities.
Whether it be a slew of water sports, camping and outdoor activities, science adventures, athletic instruction or academic competition in programs in the disabled, Sacramento State has kids covered.
The University’s Academic Talent Search provides more than 100 academically challenging, fast-paced summer courses for sixth-to ninth-grade students in subjects as diverse as web design and the Internet, cartooning, forensic science, photography and algebra. One-, three- and five-week courses are available from June 16 to Aug. 8.
The scientifically inclined may enjoy the Scientific Adventures Summer Camp. The nine week-long sessions from June 23 to August 22 include “Gizmos, Gadgets and Goop” "Space and Rocketry,” plus “Science Detective and Extreme Sports.”
Sac State’s Aquatic Center at Natoma Lake presents plenty of water sports camps for youngsters ages 7 to 17 from June 9 through Aug. 29 (excluding the week of July 4th). These choices include canoeing, kayaking, water skiing, windsurfing and white-water rafting.
WAVE Camp provides 10-to-25 year olds with physical disabilities an array of activities including instructional and recreational aquatic programs.
Outdoor enthusiasts may flock to Peak Adventures, which offers three camps for participants age 9 to 18. The Green and Gold Camp (9-12) allows youngsters to explore the campus through river walks, swimming, and arts and crafts. The Adventure Camp features hiking, rock climbing, white-water rafting in Coloma and overnight camping for ages 12-15. Expedition Campers (15-18) spend a week backpacking with their peers, culminating with a white-water rafting ride down the South Fork of the American River.
If your kids are into sports, Sac State coaches and student athletes will lead several day camps on baseball, softball, volleyball and soccer for youngsters as well as teens.
