Student Spotlight

Rebecca L. Money, Civil/Geotechnical Engineering graduate student, presented a paper on “Stability Analysis of Sacramento River Setback Levee” at GeoCongress 2006 in Atlanta, March 1. Her paper, which was based on her master's project, was published by the American Society of Civil Engineers.

Katie Keithler, Government student, and Karlos Santos-Coy, program advisor in Student Activities, won the top award for their alcohol education program, “Straight up or on the Rock” at the 2006 National Orientation Directors Association (NODA) Regional Conference. The program, developed by student peer health educators, takes a new and entertaining approach to prevention by introducing freshman students to the realities of college alcohol use, while providing critical information that can save lives. Keithler and Santos-Coy have been invited to present at NODA’s national conference in Salt Lake City, Utah in October.

Recognition

Donald Taylor, Academic Affairs, has been selected as an American Council on Education Fellow for the 2006-07 academic year. He was one of 38 fellows selected nationwide for the ACE Fellows program which is designed to strengthen institutions and leadership in American higher education by identifying and preparing promising senior faculty and administrators for responsible positions in college and university administration. Taylor is currently special assistant to the provost and vice president for Academic Affairs.

The Equity Network
has been selected to receive the Quality Education Partnership Award for Distinguished Service to Children and the Preparation of Teachers at the Spring 2006 California Council on Teacher Education Conference in San Jose, March 30 - April 1.

Scholarship

Cindi SturtzSreetharan, Anthropology, had her paper "Gentlemenly gender? Japanese men's use of clause-final politeness in casual conversations" published in the Journal of Sociolinguistics.

Celeste Roseberry-McKibbin and Laureen O’Hanlon, Speech Pathology and Audiology, had their article “Nonbiased Assessment of English Language Learners: A Tutorial" published in Communication Disorders Quarterly.

Bill Leach, Center for Collaborative Policy, has authored an article entitled "Theories about Consensus-Based Conservation" that will be published in the April 2006 Issue 2 Volume 20 Conservation Biology.

Marie Torregrosa, Faculty Student Mentor Program, Adriana Echandia, Education, Ricky Gutierrez, Health and Human Services, Hao Nguyen, Natural Science and Mathematics, and Chris Sablynski, Business Administration, co-presented a "Round Table Discussion on Faculty and Peer Mentoring in Higher Education," at the 19th Annual International Mentoring Association's Conference in Chicago, March 15-18.

Wendy Matlock, English, presented her paper "The Feminine Flesh in The Disputacione betwyx the Body and Wormes" at The Body in Medieval Culture, the annual conference of the Centre for Medieval Studies and the Center for Reformation and Renaissance Studies at the University of Toronto on March 10. Funding was provided by a grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Council of Canada.

Leon Wiebers, Theatre and Dance, designed the costumes for Ubu Roi at the Los Angeles - based classical theatre company A Noise Within. A review of the production in The Los Angeles Times review said "Leon Wiebers' supremely witty costumes suggest a goth Babes in Toyland with a dash of Lewis Carroll."

Bob Jensen, Psychology, presented a workshop titled "Extra!! Extra!! Read All About It! Getting Behind the News to Develop Critical Thinking Skills and Information Competencies,” at the 2006 Lilly Conference on College and University Teaching-West at Cal Poly, Pomona on March 18.

In the News

Scott Modell, Kinesiology and Health Science, was featured in a March 19 Sacramento Bee story about his community-based projects including Project Play.

Henry Chambers, History, was a guest on KCRA on Dec. 13, answering questions on Iraq’s political status after the election, and the impact of insurgents and American forces on the election.

Barbara O’Connor, Communication Studies, was the focus of a March 19 Sacramento Bee profile. She was also quoted in: the Dec. 13 Los Angeles Times about Assemblyman Dave Jones and the likelihood of his bill passing because of his political clout; on KXJZ on Dec. 19 about the governor’s appointments following his defeat in the special election; in Dec. 27 articles in the Marin Independent Journal, Fairfield Daily Republic and the Contra Costa Times about voter sentiment after conducting focus groups concerning the special election.

Brad Buchanan, Catherine Fraga, Joshua McKinney and Cherryl Smith, English, were guests on KXJZ on Dec. 19 and read from their new poetry books.

Tim Hodson, Center for California Studies, was quoted in the Santa Rosa Press Democrat on Dec. 26 about the governor’s need to gain support from GOP legislators to pass the state budget.

Dennis Tootelian, Business Administration, was quoted in a Dec. 22 Sacramento Bee article about the appeal of a new wedding board game made by members of the Sacramento wedding industry.

Gail Tom, Business Administration, was quoted in the Dec. 15 Sacramento News and Review about a new radio frequency identification device that attaches to consumer products and broadcasts information about them.

Joshua McKinney, English, was quoted in November’s Inside Arden about building confidence in his creative writing students.
