Gemelan Sekar Jaya
Balinese-style music and dance group
Sacramento
State’s Music Department will present two internationally acclaimed world
music guest artists in April.
Gemelan Sekar Jaya, a 25-member
group specializing in Balinese-style music and dance, will return to Sacramento
State to perform at 8 p.m. on Saturday, April 1 in the Music Recital Hall in
Capistrano Hall. The group’s Gamelan Gong Kebyar ensemble will perform
using unconventional instruments such as bronze metallophones, bamboo marimbas,
gongs, drums and flutes. Founded in 1979, Gamelan Sekar Jaya has presented more
than 400 concerts throughout California and has toured other parts of the United
States, Canada, Mexico and Bali.
I Made Arnawa will be the
guest music director for the performance, accompanied by Tjokorda Istri Putra
Padmini, who will direct the dance portion. Sacramento State’s own Indonesian
orchestra, Gamelan Suara Shanti, will also perform during the concert.
Widely respected
South Indian flutist N. Ramani will perform at 8 p.m. on Saturday, April 29
at the Music Recital Hall in Capistrano Hall. Ramani has been performing for
more than 50 years and is considered one of the top flute maestros in Carnatic
or classical South Indian music today. Now in his 70s, he is regarded as an
elder in the music community. Ramani has been honored with many awards and now
has his own academy, where he teaches students from all over the word the art
of the Carnatic flute.
