Sacramento State’s Music Department will present two internationally acclaimed world music guest artists in April.

Gemelan Sekar Jaya, a 25-member group specializing in Balinese-style music and dance, will return to Sacramento State to perform at 8 p.m. on Saturday, April 1 in the Music Recital Hall in Capistrano Hall. The group’s Gamelan Gong Kebyar ensemble will perform using unconventional instruments such as bronze metallophones, bamboo marimbas, gongs, drums and flutes. Founded in 1979, Gamelan Sekar Jaya has presented more than 400 concerts throughout California and has toured other parts of the United States, Canada, Mexico and Bali.

I Made Arnawa will be the guest music director for the performance, accompanied by Tjokorda Istri Putra Padmini, who will direct the dance portion. Sacramento State’s own Indonesian orchestra, Gamelan Suara Shanti, will also perform during the concert.

Widely respected South Indian flutist N. Ramani will perform at 8 p.m. on Saturday, April 29 at the Music Recital Hall in Capistrano Hall. Ramani has been performing for more than 50 years and is considered one of the top flute maestros in Carnatic or classical South Indian music today. Now in his 70s, he is regarded as an elder in the music community. Ramani has been honored with many awards and now has his own academy, where he teaches students from all over the word the art of the Carnatic flute.

Both performances are $15 for general admission and $8 for students and seniors. For ticket information contact the Sacramento State Ticket Office at (916) 278-4323.
