Service Awards to honor alums

This year’s Distinguished Service Awards, recognizing alumni and friends of the University for their contributions to the campus and the community, will be from 5:30 - 9 p.m, Thursday, April 12 at the Alumni Center. Tickets are available by contacting 278-6295 or alumni@csus.edu. Those to be honored are:

Lifetime Achievement Award
Roger Valine (’73, Sociology)
Roger Valine is an exemplary example of what it means to be a community leader. Valine recently retired from Vision Service Plans where he served as president and CEO of the nation’s leading provider of eye care health plans. Under his leadership, VSP was listed numerous times on Fortune magazine’s “100 Best Companies to Work For.” At the same time its revenue grew fourfold to more than $2 billion. Valine’s philosophy of treating others the way you would like to be treated extends far beyond the Sacramento Region. VSP offered $15 million worth of free eye care services to people who lost their homes after Hurricane Katrina.

Valine has been active in the community serving on many boards and committees including the Sacramento State Alumni Association board of directors, the University’s Executive Committee, the Sacramento Entrepreneurship Academy, PRIDE Industries, Transplant Hope, the Sacramento Region Economic Cluster Project, Christian Brothers High School, the Young Presidents’ Organization, and the Valley Vision Workforce Development Regional Cluster Project.

Valine received the Distinguished Service Award in 1997 and was a major donor to the Alumni Center campaign. This is only the fourth time an individual has been selected for the award for Lifetime Achievement.

Distinguished Service Awards
Larry Augusta (‘62, Social Science)

Larry Augusta retired as the assistant counsel for the State Board of Equalization in 2002 after 35 years of state service. He has been on the Alumni Association board of directors since 1999 and was president in 2001-02. He also served on the statewide CSU Alumni Council and is a member of the University’s Community Advisory Board, Community Council, Stinger Athletic Association, Homecoming Week Committee and Alumni Scholarship Committee. In 1997, he was honored by the Department of Social Sciences at the Alumni Honors Luncheon.

Augusta is active in Sacramento High School’s Visual and Performing Arts Foundation, the Sacramento City Music Coalition and the Jaycees. He has served on the Sacramento City Planning Commission, the YMCA board of directors, the Sacramento Old City Association and the Bradley Wilson Foundation.

Lauren R. Hammond (’77, Government), Sacramento City Councilmember

Lauren Hammond is the first African American woman in Sacramento history to be elected to the Sacramento City Council. For 22 years she worked in the State Senate as telecommunications contract administrator and coordinator for the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Hammond has earned awards from the NAACP and from the Government Department at the Alumni Honors Luncheon. In 2003, she was named one of Sacramento’s “30 Most Powerful Women” by Sacramento magazine and in 2004 she was inducted into the National Coalition of Black Women. She is a founder of the Harold C. Washington Democratic Club, past-president of the California Elected Women’s Association for Education and Research, a member of the American Leadership Forum and the Southern Poverty Law Center, and has served on the Alumni Association board of directors.

Scott W. Maxwell (’85, Construction Management), vice president of Unger Construction

Scott Maxwell joined Unger Construction in 1985 and went on to become company vice president. He specializes in industrial construction, new high-tech office buildings and renovation of existing telecommunication and data centers. Maxwell is a former president of the Alumni Association and was instrumental in engaging several major donors for the campaign to build the Alumni Center. He and his firm also made numerous upgrades to the Hornet Stadium complex which enabled Sac State to successfully host the 2000 and 2004 U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials.

Maxwell was recognized by the Construction Management Department at the 2000 Alumni Honors Luncheon. He is a constant supporter of Sacramento State and serves on the University’s Executive Committee, the Community Council and the Construction Management Education Fund Board.

Gloria Carido Nomura (’62, Social Science)

Gloria Nomura began her teaching career at Hiram Johnson High School in Sacramento before moving to the Stockton Unified School District, where she guided and mentored students for more than 39 years.

Nomura was the first Filipina elected to the Stockton City Council, serving two terms, including five years as vice mayor. She is a founding member of the St. George’s Neighborhood Betterment Committee, coordinator of the San Joaquin Healthy Children’s Collaborative, and a member of the San Joaquin Public Health Early Prenatal Care Consortium. She is also on the advisory committee for the John Cheadle YMCA Center, chairs the local American Heart Association chapter and is on the board of directors for SEEDS, which provides tuition assistance for students in Stockton Catholic schools.

Alice D. Perez (’99, Finance and Insurance) manager of residential services, Sacramento Municipal Utility District

Alice Perez oversees programs, products and services for SMUD’s more than 500,000 residential customers. She is also responsible for the group that supports funding for energy efficiency loan programs and oversees programs that assist low-income and special needs customers. Before joining SMUD, she was vice president and leader of U.S. Bank’s national multicultural banking initiatives. She was recently appointed by Gov. Schwarzenegger to the California Student Aid Commission and the ScholarShare Investment Board.

Perez is on the boards of the National Low Income Energy Consortium, Asian Pacific Chamber of Commerce Sacramento, Mercy Health Foundation, Center for Youth Citizenship, and American Leadership Forum Mountain Valley Chapter. She served as chair of the Sacramento Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and is past president of the Rotary Club of Roseville-Sunrise.

Lloyd O. Snelson (’57, Education, ’67, Education)

Lloyd Snelson enrolled at Sac State during its first full-year of instruction at the J Street campus. He was elected student body vice-president and head cheerleader, and was a letterman on the first two football teams. After graduating, he began a long and distinguished career as a teacher, coach and mentor as a high school principal in the San Juan Unified District, first at Rio Americano High School and then at Bella Vista High School before retiring in 1993.

Snelson has contributed thousands of volunteer hours to his alma mater. He served as president of the Football Boosters and the original Stinger Foundation and is currently president of the Sacramento State Football and Friends Alumni Chapter and a board member for the Stinger Athletic Association.

Lawrence Williams (’50, Accountancy, ’58, Secondary Education)

Larry Williams is a retired educator and administrator. After graduation he helped establish the Alumni Association in 1950 and served on the Alumni Board. He taught at Stockton’s Edison High and, after a tour in the Army, Grant Union High School and American River College.

He was on the founding team for Cosumnes River College and became dean of student services. After retiring in 1984 he was asked to oversee educational programs and curriculum development for the Los Rios Community College District and then to serve as interim vice-chancellor of student services for the state community college system. He serves as a management trainer for Job Corps in California and was president of the board of directors of the Children’s Home Society of California.

Karen Y. Zamarripa (’00, Public Policy and Administration), assistant vice chancellor for advocacy and institutional affairs for the California State University system

Karen Zamarripa leads the CSU system’s Sacramento team in advocating on budget and legislative issues in the State Capitol and California government. In addition, she oversees systemwide alumni and community relations. In 2004, she received the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education’s Marvin D. “Swede” Johnson award, given annually to the top university state relations professional in the country.

Previously Zamarripa represented K-12 schools for the California Boards Association and served as a staff member in the State Senate. She chairs the State Relations Task Force and has served on the board of directors of Leadership California for seven years including two terms as President. She was honored with the Leadership California Service Award in 2002. She has also served as president of Capitol Network.

Daniel Zingale
Chief of staff to California First Lady Maria Shriver

For nearly 20 years, Dan Zingale has been involved in public policy regarding human rights, preventive health care, national AIDS policy, Medicaid reform, and California financial solvency issues. He is currently a senior-level advisor to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Before working for the Schwarzenegger administration he served on the Agriculture Labor Relations Board and was the cabinet secretary and deputy chief of staff for Gov. Gray Davis. He founded the California Department of Managed Health Care, establishing its HMO Help Center. Nationally, he’s worked on AIDS issues and civil and human rights, serving on the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights. He was a student at Sacramento State from 1978 to 1981 before earning a bachelor’s degree at UC Berkeley and a master’s degree at Harvard University.

Honorary Alumnus Award
Dan Cole, co-founder of The Evergreen Company

Dan Cole earned his degree in political science from the University of Oregon but has adopted Sac State as his second alma mater. Cole co-founded The Evergreen Company in 1981 and its projects include The Capitol Bank Building, The Ridge at Creekside retail center and the State of California’s Employment Development Department. In service to the U.S. Army and the Army Reserve, he received numerous medals including a Silver Star, two Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart.

Cole has worked to increase the University’s impact and presence in the community through his role as director of the Sacramento Region Community Foundation. He has also been a leader in the Boy Scouts of America, founded the Sacramento Education Job and College Program at C.K. McClatchy High School and is a volunteer coordinator and advisor for facility improvements at Sacramento High School.

Distinguished Faculty Award
Kim Hughes (’84, Physical Education) Hornet Gymnastics head coach

Kim Hughes has been a staple of the Sacramento State gymnastics program for more than 29 years, 25 of them as head coach. He has developed a program which rose from the ranks of Division II and is now a model of success at the Division I level. Under his tutelage, the team has flourished, winning six league titles in the last seven years. The Hornets have also earned 40 All-American honors during his tenure.

The awards presented to Hughes in 2006 alone include West Region Coach of the Year, Western Athletic Conference Coach of the Year, and Western Athletic Conference Champions. His coaching resume includes nearly 20 years with the Nor-Cal Gymnastics Camp in Santa Cruz. Hughes is involved with the United Way, and has served as the athletics department representative on the campus committee for seven years.
