Sacramento’s
annual Earth Day celebration will once again be held at Sacramento State from
11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 22 in the Main Quad.
The Sacramento Area Earth
Day Network expects more than 8,000 people to attend the day-long event filled
with activities that promote environmental education, empowerment and advocacy.
The event is free and the public is invited to explore more than 100 booths
and exhibits on maintaining a sustainable lifestyle and community.
Highlights of the celebration
include hands-on activities for all ages, music, vegetarian food, information
about organic farming and sustainable agriculture, wildlife presentations and
more. There will also be a place where people can safely dispose of household
batteries, cell phones, ink cartridges and other recycling.
Also at the event Sue Anne
Foster, a new Sacramento State art professor, will build a 70-foot labyrinth
with the help of students from her two classes. Foster has built the symbolic
structure each year Earth Day has been on campus but this will be her first
year incorporating Sacramento State students in the project. She said walking
the labyrinth helps quiet the mind and calm the body. Tables will also be set
up where people can learn how to draw their own labyrinth.
Sacramento Area Bicycle
Advocates will have an area where free valet parking will be available for bikes.
