Faculty Initiate" at the Phi Kappa Phi annual banquet at 7 p.m., Tuesday,

at 6 p.m. in the University Union Redwood Room.
The nominated faculty are: Jacueline Carrigan, Sociology; Patricia Clark-Ellis,
College of Health and Human Services; Jennifer Lundmark, Biological Sciences;
Katherine McReynolds, Chemistry; Rosemary Papa, Educational Leadership and Center
for Teaching and Learning; and Otis Scott, College of Social Sciences and Interdisciplinary
Studies. Along with the faculty honorees, more than 100 Sacramento State students
will be initiated in the society and several students will be awarded scholarships.
International scholars
reception
Phi Beta Delta, the honor society for international scholars, will host a reception
in honor of the international research scholars at Sacramento State, a group
that represents a variety of countries and disciplines. The campus community
is invited to attend the event from 2 to 4 p.m. on Friday, April 7 in the University
Union Forest Suite.
To RSVP, contact the Office of Global Education at 278-6686.
Defining the meaning
of life
Carol Cleland, professor at the University of Colorado, Boulder and NASA Institute
for Astrobiology, will speak on “Searching for a Universal Theory of Life”
from 3 to 5 p.m. on Monday, April 3 in the University Union Summit Room. Cleland
argues that a scientifically compelling answer to the question “What is
life?” requires a general theory of living systems, as opposed to a definition
of "life."
Her talk is sponsored by the Visiting Scholars Program and the Department of
Philosophy. It is free and open to the public, staff, faculty and students.
