Maria Jaoudi, Humanities and Religious Studies, gave a presentation for the Crocker Museum's exhibition “Buddha” which investigates how the politics, spiritual dimensions and rituals in Tibetan Buddhism have been captured on film. She introduced and led a discussion for the Crocker Cinematique March 19 on Khyentse Norbu's film, The Cup.
Ted Lascher, Social Sciences and Interdisciplinary Sciences, was elected to the Executive Council of the Western Political Science Association at the WPSA annual meeting in Vancouver, Canada. He also presented research on political parties and participated in a round-table discussion on political reform in California.
Duane Campbell, in Bilingual/Multicultural Education Emeritus has published the fourth edition of his book, Choosing Democracy: a Practical Guide to Multicultural Education (Allyn and Bacon, 2010).
Prior editions have sold more than 40,000 copies and have been used in universities around the nation. The work includes analysis of race, class and gender as well as strategies for multicultural education developed with students at Sacramento State over the last two decades.
The fourth edition has a new section with co-author Francisco Reveles, an expert on gang-related behavior and the chair of the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Development.
Choosing Democracy includes contributions from several Sacramento State faculty including Forrest Davis, Ed Lee, John Cowan and Peter Baird. Also contributing was Dolores Delgado Campbell, a Sacramento State graduate and professor in history at American River College.
The fourth edition is significantly revised and includes a detailed analysis of the current crisis in society and schools and the No Child Left Behind effort.
Campbell retired from Sacramento State in 2008 and currently teaches part time in the Bilingual/Multicultural Education Department.
Student spotlight
Kerby Boschee, a Sacramento State student, won a student award from Phi Beta Delta, the honor society for international scholars. The organization gives only two such student awards at its annual conference, which was held recently in Miami, Fla.
Phi Beta Delta is an international honor society with about 170 chapters in the United States and abroad. The Sacramento State chapter is the Omicron Chapter and has twice received the Outstanding Chapter of the Year Award.
