Porfirio M. Loeza, Teacher Education, was recently awarded a joint Fulbright Fellowship to the University of El Salvador and Don Bosco University in San Salvador, El Salvador. He will be consulting in 2008 at the University of El Salvador as a language education specialist and developing a master’s degree program in applied linguistics for the school of languages. At Don Bosco University, he will be cooperating with the Institute for Research and Education on a study of the standardized testing system that is currently in use in El Salvador’s public schools.
Ricky Gutierrez, Criminal Justice, has recently co-authored an article published in Police Quarterly, titled “Federal subsidies and evidence of progressive change: A quantitative assessment of the effects of targeted grants on manpower and innovation in large U.S. police agencies;” written a book review published in The Journal of Critical Criminology, titled “Criminal justice: Retribution vs. restoration,” edited by Eleanor Hannon Judah and Rev. Michael Bryant Binghamton, NY: The Haworth Social Work Press, 2004; and delivered a paper titled “Experiential learning and pedagogy: The Sac-Mentoring experience” at the annual meeting of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences.
Ted Lascher and Rob Wassmer, Public Policy and Administration, and Stephan Kroll, Economics, co-authored an article titled "Taxes, Expenditures, Ideology, and Happiness," published in State Tax Notes, March 19. RobWassmer delivered a lecture titled "Causes of Urban Sprawl (Decentralization) in the United States" to the Department of Economics at the University of Nevada, Reno, March 30.
Nancy Fox, Transportation and Parking, was elected president of the Sacramento Transportation Management Association at a recent Board of Director’s meeting. She recently served as treasurer of the association.
Bill Owen, Communication Studies, has written a book entitled, small events:haibun, by w. f. owen, published by Red Moon Press.
Ali Porbaha, Civil Engineering, has been selected as the 2006-07 recipient of the President's Award for Research and Creative Activity. He will deliver a lecture on “Innovative Technologies to Accelerate Geoconstruction” at the award ceremony, 4 p.m., April 23 in the Alumni Center. Porbaha has also been awarded a National Science Foundation grant to develop a facility for a Seismic Simulation Laboratory to simulate earthquake engineering research.
Sheila Macias and Brendan McVeigh, Office of Community Collaboration, were acknowledged in the book Whispers of the Past by Flo Oy Wong.
Otis L. Scott, Dean of the College of Social Sciences and Interdisciplinary Studies, will be the keynote speaker at the Initiation Banquet of the Phi Kappa Phi society, which will be held at the University Union Ballroom at 7 p.m., April 18. His speech is titled "Implications and Prescriptions for a Post Brown vs. Board of Education Society."
