The San Francisco Branch of the National League of American Pen Women has established the Mary Mackey Short Story Prize in honor of Sacramento State professor emerita Mary Mackey. The announcement will be made at the 2009 Award ceremony at the San Francisco Public Library. The first prize will be awarded in spring 2010.
Craig Gallet, Economics, has had two papers accepted for publication: “The Demand for Fish: A Meta-Analysis of the Price Elasticity” (Aquaculture Economics and Management) and “The Determinants of AIDS Mortality: Evidence from a Panel of U.S. States” (Atlantic Economic Journal).
Katherine Dawn McReynolds, Chemistry, and her students Jonathan Patane, Vincent Trapani and Janice Villavert, published “Preparative Production of Colominic Acid Oligomers via a Facile Microwave Hydrolysis” in Carbohydrate Research 2009, 344(6), 820-824.
Darryl O. Freeman, Social Sciences and Interdisciplinary Sciences, presented a paper entitled “Intervening Identity and Citizen Borders Between Native Americans and African Heritage Indians” at the National Association for Ethnic Studies annual conference in San Diego. He also chaired a panel discussion on “Boundary Issues of Identity, Power and Assimilation in the Hispanic Community.”
Roger Sullivan, Anthropology, gave two co-authored presentations at the recent American Association of Physical Anthropologists annual meeting in Chicago, and had a co-authored paper accepted by the journal Integrative and Comparative Biology.
Student spotlight
Felix Barba has been accepted to the Teach for America program in Philadelphia.
Teach for America is a nonprofit program that recruits top college graduates to teach in low-income schools. Barba accepted the offer to teach bilingual elementary school in Philadelphia for two years and will study concurrently for his teaching certification at the University of Pennsylvania.
Angelo A. Williams, Educational Leadership and Policy Studies, presented program results and research on persistence and retention at the 2009 California Community College Chief Student Services Officers conference April 2, in Sacramento.
