The Sacramento State campaign, “No woman left behind,” will be the focus of this year’s annual Sac State Women Take Back the Night rally at 6 p.m., Tuesday, April 14 in the Library Quad.
Inspired by the actions of three female De Anza soccer players who intervened in an assault of a girl at a party, the campaign was started in 2007 by concerned Sacramento State students to educate the community about sexual assault.
“The three women from De Anza are amazing,” says Jessica Heskin, the coordinator of the Violence and Sexual Assault Support Services Program. “When they spoke here in October of 2007, they got a standing ovation from more than 200 female athletes. It was incredible.”
Participants of the campaign wear glow-in-the-dark bracelets to parties, bars and nightclubs to show and spread the word about commitment to ending sexual violence.
“The campaign has really caught on because it’s so simple,” Heskin says. “The message is, if you see someone intoxicated and you know she isn't safe, you have the obligation to step in and do something about it.”
