Stephen Garcia, the University’s vice president for Administration and Business Affairs, received the California State University’s 2008 Quality Improvement Champion of the Year award. The award is presented annually and recognizes the efforts of a California State University employee who has demonstrated leadership in the pursuit of quality improvement.

Garcia was not available to receive the award in person at the CSU QI Symposium at the February 27 ceremony, but was presented with the award at the bi-monthly The California State University’s Chief Administrators and Business Officers meeting on campus Wednesday, April 9.

Garcia received the award through his extensive leadership for quality improvement programs on two CSU campuses: California State University, San Marcos, where he served as vice president for Finance and Administrative Services from 2000 to 2004; and at Sacramento State, where Garcia has served as vice president for Administration and Business Affairs since 2004.

Additionally, Garcia was lauded for his focus on communication and staff engagement through personal attention, inclusion of staff in planning activities and support for a variety of staff-focused programs, including recognition opportunities, newsletters and committee memberships, among others.

“Vice president Garcia’s priorities and high standards are communicated at every opportunity, as are his words of appreciation for the work and accomplishments of staff,” says Sarah Whyte, director of ABA’s strategic planning and quality improvement. “He has brought a new level of enthusiasm to the staff in Administration and Business Affairs.”

“I am extremely proud to receive this award on behalf of the many fine staff and managers of the Administration and Business Affairs division both at Sacramento State and Cal State San Marcos,” Garcia says. “President Gonzalez has provided the vision and the type of leadership at both campuses that inspires us to achieve and accomplish many things for the students that attend our fine institution. My sincere appreciation goes to those who nominated me.”
