Alyson Buckman, Humanities and Religious Studies, presented an essay entitled, "[Not] A Class Act, or 'Check out Slut-o-rama': Faith Lehane and the Polemics of Class,” at the Southwest/Texas Popular Culture Association/American Culture Association in February. Buckman also presented at the national Popular Culture Association/American Culture Association in March with an essay entitled, “'You've Always Been the Head Pilgrim Girl': Stars Hollow as Embodiment of the American Dream.”
Terry Cataline, Admissions/Records, was a co-presenter of “Electronic Transcript Exchange in the 21st Century” at the Alliance/Peoplesoft Higher Education Users Group meeting in Las Vegas, March 10-13. The session introduced the new statewide CCCTran electronic transcript system developed by the California Community College system. Also included in the session was an overview of the new transcript business processes developed between the four Los Rios Community Colleges and Sacramento State, as the new CCCTran system began production in the Sacramento area in mid-2007.
Kevan Shafizadeh, Civil Engineering, co-authored a paper, “Rational Models for Setting All-Red Clearance, Yellow Clearance and Green Extension Intervals,” which was presented at the 2008 Institute of Transportation Engineers Annual Technical Conference and Exhibit in Miami on March 31. Shafizadeh also gave a presentation titled, “Technological Challenges for a University Transit Link to Regional Light Rail in Sacramento,” at the 2008 American Public Transit Association Transportation and University Communities Conference in Reno on April 6.
Dan Melzer, English, was part of the panel, “Assessment, Placement, and Institutional Change,” at the Conference on College Composition and Communication on April 4 in New Orleans.
Recognition
Charles Postel, History, won two distinguished awards for his book The Populist Vision. Postel received the Frederick Jackson Turner Award for “an author's first book on a significant phase of American history.” The award was presented by the Organization of American Historians. He also won the Bancroft Prize for a “distinguished work in American History.” The award was presented by Columbia University.
Student Spotlight
Robyn Bilski, Biological Sciences, gave a presentation entitled, “The effects of structural enhancement on Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) spawning habitat,” at the 42nd Annual Conference of the Cal-Neva Chapter of the American Fisheries Society on April 3 at Tahoe City, California. This work is supervised by Ron Coleman (Biology) and Tim Horner (Geology).
