There’s an old saying, “Whatever doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.” For Judy Evey, those words ring true. She is a two-time cancer survivor, and she is doing her part to help other cancer patients find their inner strength to fight the disease.

“The ‘C’ word is not to be feared,” says Evey. “You have to have a positive attitude through the whole process and do what it takes to get through it.”

Evey, who has been at Sacramento State for 37 years, is a grant administration specialist with Sacramento State’s Office of Research Administration and Contract Administration. She helps ensure proper administration and compliance of grants, contracts and other sponsored agreements the University faculty and staff receive.  She reviews award documents and helps recipients with the requirements necessary to maintain their funding.

In 1998, Evey was diagnosed with endometrial cancer. She underwent surgery but was diagnosed with it again in 2000. She is currently cancer free.

In 2006 she became involved with the Sacramento State, UC Davis Cancer Center Partnership on Health Disparities after reading an e-mail announcing the partnership and asking for volunteer support. “It took about five seconds for me to e-mail back to volunteer,” Evey says. “I wanted to give back to the community.”

The partnership’s goal, she said, is to reduce disparities for underserved populations, many of which have language, religious, social or cultural barriers that may prevent clear communication with their doctor.

“I love my job, and I love working with the partnership,” she says. “It’s different and challenging and I’m personally involved.”
