Learn about sabbaticals, difference-in-pay
The Office of Human Resources is offering its annual Sabbatical and Difference-in-Pay Leaves Workshop from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Friday, April 21 in the University Union California Suite.

Poetry event
Former Sacramento State English professor Eugene B. Redmond will lead a cast of faculty, alumni and student poets in "Drumvoices: A Poetic-Bluesaic-'Mosaic’”" from 1:30 to 3 p.m., Thursday, April 20 in the Hinde Auditorium.

The event, held during National Poetry Month, celebrates the publication of Drumvoices Revue #14 which features many of the faculty and students who will perform: Mary Mackey, Jose Montoya, Olivia Castellano, Dennis Smitz, Odessa Bethea, Marie Celestin and Jumaane Cowan. Redmond, founding editor of Drumvoices Revue, will be accompanied by associate editor Darlene Roy and Charlois Lumpkin, members of the EBR Writers Club of East Saint Louis, Ill. Master drummer Selwyn Jones will perform, as well as accompany some of the poets. A book-signing will follow the event.

New breakfast place
The University Center Restaurant is now serving breakfast. It is open to faculty, staff, students and guests, offering a full-service sit-down environment ranging from a quick snack and coffee to a full breakfast and beverage meal. Breakfast hours are 7:30 to 10:30 a.m.

Who wants to be an accountant?
Beta Alpha Psi will hold a free "Careers in Accounting" event from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, April 26 in the University Union Ballroom. It is open to all community college and Sacramento State students who have an interest in accounting and want to learn more about the career choices available to accounting majors.

The event will begin with an hour for networking with participating companies followed by a discussion panel. Participating firms include professionals from local and regional "Big 4" accounting firms, state and federal agencies, and private industry including Ernst & Young, Intel, PriceWaterhouse Cooopers, Franchise Tax Board, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, KPMG and Pacific Coast Building Products.

Get to know the Arboretum
The University Arboretum will have a series of spring open houses from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Fridays, April 28 and May 19, and Saturday, May 27.

Tours of the facility will be led hourly by Arboretum director and biology professor Mike Baad. The 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. tours will focus on California native plants while the 10 a.m. and noon tours will feature Arboretum plantings from throughout the world. Participants can also get information on how to join the Friends of the University Arboretum and enhance the Arboretum's outreach to the Sacramento community.

Physics and Astronomy Professor Christopher L. Taylor will host public observing nights at the campus observatory beginning at 9 p.m. on Friday, April 28 and Friday, May 5 on the roof of Amador Hall. The talks will be preceded at 8 p.m. by a public lecture on his research titled "Galaxy Formation in a Cosmic Blender: Tidal Dwarf Galaxies and Molecular Gas in Stephan's Quintet" in Mendocino Hall 1015.

In the event of rain or clouds, the viewing will be cancelled, but the talks will still be held.

Livingston Lecture nominees wanted
Nominations are being sought for the 2006-07 Livingston Distinguished Faculty Lecture. The faculty member will be selected this spring and will deliver the lecture during the fall semester at a convocation held in his or her honor. The award, named for former government professor John C. Livingston, recognizes faculty members who have “transcended their disciplines and in so doing having positively affected the life of the University, displaying a consisted and engaging collegiality and a strong commitment to students throughout their careers” at the University.

Nomination letters should include a detailed description of the nominee’s qualifications and a copy of the nominee’s resume. Nominations must be received in the Faculty Senate office in Sacramento Hall 254, campus zip 6036, by 2 p.m., Friday, April 21.
