University set to honor Marcy Friedman

Sacramento State will honor Sacramento arts and education advocate Marcy Friedman with the conferral of an Honorary Doctor of Fine Arts by the Board of Trustees of the California State University and Sacramento State. The ceremony will take place at the commencement for the College of Arts and Letters, noon, Friday, May 21 at Arco Arena.
Friedman, a champion in the arts community in the Sacramento region and throughout the state for nearly four decades, is currently the campaign co-chair for a $100 million, 100,000 square-foot expansion of the Crocker Art Museum.
Her support for higher education includes service on Sacramento State’s School of the Arts Advisory Committee, and the Morton and Marcy Friedman Foundation has generously supported Sacramento State for student scholarships, campus beautification and a speaker’s program in memory of late Sacramento Mayor Joe Serna.
“Marcy Friedman’s extraordinary contributions to the cultural and educational well-being of the people of California, the Sacramento region and to Sacramento State make her an excellent choice for an Honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts,” says University President Alexander Gonzalez. “More than ever, it is important that we recognize individuals who dedicate themselves to improving higher education and providing enriching opportunities to our students, and it is fitting to recognize her vast efforts with this distinguished honor.”
Friedman has received many honors and awards for her commitment to improving the community. Along with her husband, she was named Sacramentan of the Year by the Sacramento Metro Chamber of Commerce and Philanthropist of the Year by the National Society of Fundraising Executives. She has been honored by Business Volunteers for the Arts and received the “Woman of the Year” Distinguished Community Service Award for the United Way.
