Teachers, teaching candidates and undergrads still have time to apply for a trip to Cuernavaca, Mexico, that makes learning a new language seem like a vacation.
Sacramento State’s College of Continuing Education is sponsoring the trip, June 28 through July 12, that immerses the traveler in Mexican culture, history, education and people while strengthening the participant’s Spanish-language skills. Beginners are welcome and it is open to the community.
Led by Peter Baird, professor of bilingual/multicultural education, the trip will supplement the participant’s language study with a seminar on current issues in Mexican education.
Attend an orientation in Sacramento on June 4, then travel on your own to Mexico City and take a one-hour bus trip to Cuernavaca. The two-week stay includes optional trips to pre-Columbian sites and villages, markets and museums in the region. Group members may also participate in cultural activities such as weaving, cooking and music.
Spanish classes are held during the mornings and seminars in English are held four times each week with Baird.
“The experience was rewarding both intellectually and emotionally,” says Sacramento State professor Catherine Christo, one of last year’s participants.
The cost, which includes classes, family home stay, seminar and three units, is $1,935. That does not include plane fare to Mexico City. The deadline is Friday, May 16.
