Peace conference features former Nigerian vice president

Atiku Abubakar, immediate past vice-president of Nigeria, will be the guest of honor and speaker at Sacramento State’s Africa Peace Awards dinner and dance, 7 p.m., Saturday, May 2, in the University Union Ballroom.

Tickets are $50 for a VIP reception, dinner and dance; and $35 for the dinner and dance. The cost for students is $25. The event is open to the public. Tickets are available at the Sacramento State Ticket Box Office, 278-4323 or online at www.tickets.com.

The event will include African cuisine, African cultural performances and an African fashion show.

The conference is part of the University’s 18th annual Africa/Diaspora Conference, April 30 - May 2. There will be a special luncheon presentation on Fighting Piracy in Somalia noon-2 p.m., Friday, May 1, in the University Union Redwood Room, by Nii Akuetteh; an African policy analyst with Washington, D.C.- based Trans Africa.

Conference events are sponsored by University’s Center for African Peace and Conflict Resolution and the Pan African Studies Program. The conference is open to the public and is free for Sacramento State students, faculty and staff. The cost for non-campus attendees is $50.
