Ron Coleman, Biological Sciences, participated in two “Dinner with a Scientist” events this spring. The program brings fifth- through 10th-graders together with scientists to interest young people in careers in science. The first event was March 10 at the University of the Pacific and the second was March 26 at UC Merced.

Phil Hitchcock, director of the University Library Gallery and Michael Shores, a Sacramento State art student, served as curators for an art contest sponsored by Breathe California of Sacramento–Emigrant Trails, on April 6. More than 150 entries were submitted by students at six regional high schools. Results of the judging will be announced at the 33rd annual Clean Air Awards luncheon 11:30 a.m., Thursday, May 7, at the Sheraton Grand Hotel. Sacramento State’s University Transportation and Parking Services is a sponsor of the luncheon.

Breathe California of Sacramento–Emigrant Trails is an organization established to promote healthier air and help prevent lung and other air pollution-related diseases by partnering with youth, advocating public policy, supporting air pollution research and educating the public.

Warren Drew Smith, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, is this year’s recipient of the Outstanding Scholarly Achievement Award. The presentation is 4 p.m.-6p.m., Tuesday, May 5, in Hinde Auditorium. The award is given each year to a Sacramento State faculty member who has, over many years, made significant contributions to a discipline through scholarly activity, creative/artistic endeavors, research and publication. Each year the Research and Creative Activity Subcommittee of the Faculty Senate solicits nominations and selects a faculty member to receive this award. Smith is the 47th recipient of the award.
