Members of Sac State's chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineering won first place at the 2007 water treatment competition held April 14 at the University of Nevada, Reno. "Water Treatment from Your Kitchen And Beyond," was the theme of the competition won by Darina Palacio, the team captain and team members Jacqueline Etter, Francesca Grosjean, Jennifer Guerard, John Nurmi, Tanya Oselskaya, Yelena Oselskaya, John Preston, Mark Quito, Luise Sarmiento and Charles Zelnik.John Johnson provided technical advice. Ali Porbaha, Civil Engineering, is the ASCE faculty advisor.
Beth Glidewell, Pang Moua, Kim Nelson and Priti Patel, Biology, presented their research at the 32nd West Coast Biological Sciences Undergraduate Research Conference in Los Angeles. Glidewell placed first in her session, Ecology, with a paper entitled, “Morphometrics as a method to determine sexual dimorphism in the convict cichlid.” The students were coached by Ron Coleman, Biological Sciences.
Tom Knutson, Communication Studies, and Richard Adams, English, conducted the second annual Pre-Departure Orientation Session for students participating in the Chitralada Royal Palace School teaching assistant program. Emily Smith, Jennifer Trip, Maria Xiong and Taylor Carlson will spend the academic year working as English language assistants in Bangkok, Thailand. Session presenters included Pat Chirapravati, Art; and students who participated in the 2006-07 program Parin “Ohm” Srijohn, Kan Towongaricharoen, Casey Mayville and Kyle Hardwick.
Kim Folkes, Darryl Freeman, Toni Tinker and Kenna Toney presented research papers at the 16th annual Africa Diaspora Conference held April 26-28. Members of Sacramento State’s Black Students of Political Science Association participated on a panel, “The Influence of African Immigrants on Black Political Attitudes and Behavior in the United States 1990-2006.”
Scholarship
Kal Gezi, Education Leadership and Policy Studies, was elected president-elect of Phi Kappa Phi at the organization’s April 18 banquet. Arnie Golub, Psychology, will serve as president of the society for the second year. Edward Lascher, Jr., Public Policy and Administration, was named outstanding faculty initiate for 2007.
Susan Sherry, and Bill Leach, Center for Collaborative Policy, chaired panels at the workshop “The Role of University Centers in Collaborative Governance,” held April 25-27 in Seattle, Wash. Leach also served as a panelist for the roundtable “The Future of the Advocacy Coalition Framework” held April 14 in Chicago, Ill.
