Laurette Suter has a long history with Sacramento State. After receiving her degree in foreign languages from the University and later graduate studies in educational policy and administration in higher education, she began a career in media and management for University Media Services. After working there for 20 years, she became a professor of French and the director of the department’s foreign language lab.

Suter says she developed her taste for teaching during her college years and while living in France where she taught English for a year to junior high school students in a French government foreign program. “It was a great experience,” she says.

Suter says her original goal was to begin a career in diplomatic affairs, but teaching was always what she really wanted to do. “I enjoy the simple contact with the students, their learning and their desire to know the language. I like seeing their language proficiency grow.”

She says she supports students’ development of language by encouraging them to travel overseas. She is enthusiastic about Sacramento State’s study abroad and work abroad programs offered through the Office of Global Education. “Students have the chance to improve their language skills and experience a new cultural setting.”

Suter speaks highly of her years and experiences at the University. “Working at Sacramento State has been my life. I have developed friendships, skills, and expertise. I know the campus well, and I am big believer in the Sacramento State education system.”
