Mozart featured in University opera

Sacramento State’s Music department and the Sacramento Opera company are again collaborating for Tales from the Village, presented at 8 p.m., Thursday, May 15 and at 3 p.m., Sunday, May 18 in the Playwright's Theatre.

Tales features two selections. The first is the Act II Finale from Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro, and will be sung in Italian. The second selection is Stephen Paulus’ The Village Singer, performed in English.

The two pieces were chosen because they provide the performers with something of a counterpoint, says director Daniel Helfgot, Sacramento State’s Opera Theatre program instructor. Figaro provides the foundation of a traditional opera, he says, while The Village Singer uses contemporary musical language, crucial for the singers’ repertoire.

“And they are both ensemble pieces, providing for the largest group of students possible,” Helfgot says.

The performances will be conducted by Timm Rolek, artistic director of Sacramento Opera. This is the second collaboration between the University and Sacramento Opera. Last semester the two joined forces for a performance of individual selections from various productions.

Tickets for the performances are $8 general admission and $5 for students and seniors. Tickets are available at the University Ticket office, 278-4323 or www.tickets.com. For more information on the opera or the Music Department, call 278-5155 or visit www.csus.edu/music.
