Grads prepare for end of term, commencement of new life

More than 4,500 Sacramento State students will move the tassel on their mortarboard this month, signifying the culmination of a college career and graduation from the University.

Sacramento State’s 61st spring commencement is Friday, May 22, and Saturday, May 23, at Arco Arena. Friday ceremonies begin at noon with the College of Arts and Letters, followed by the College of Engineering and Computer Science at 3 p.m. The day ends with the College of Education at 5:30 p.m.

On May 23, ceremonies begin at 8:30 a.m. for the College of Health and Human Services, followed by the College of Social Sciences and Interdisciplinary Studies at 11:30 a.m., and the College of Business Administration at 2:30 p.m. Spring commencement wraps up with the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics at 5:30 p.m.

The University’s seven colleges will graduate 4,524 candidates.

The largest graduating class is from the College of Health and Human Services, with 1,006 students. The College of Arts and Letters is next, with 903 graduates.

Each college also will present its Dean’s Award to a student in recognition of excellence in academics and service. Recipients are: Jaspreet Singh, College of Business Administration; Tim Bender, College of Engineering and Computer Science; Kevin Gustafson, College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics; Joshua Saldate, College of Arts and Letters; Nancy Chiang, College of Health and Human Services; Roberta Chevrette, College of Social Sciences and Interdisciplinary Studies; and Christina Arrodondo, College of Education.

During the ceremonies, University President Alexander Gonzalez will present the President’s Award to the top graduate. He also will present the President’s Medal for Distinguished Service to George Crandell, chairman of The University Foundation at Sacramento State board of directors, for his fundraising efforts for the Troops to College program and 23 years of service to Sacramento State. The board has helped raise more than $150,000 for the program in less than a year.

President Gonzalez also will present an honorary degree to Sacramento businessman and philanthropist Fredrick Teichert. Teichert, a Sacramento State alumnus, is a board member of Teichert Inc., a major construction and materials company, and executive director of the Teichert Foundation, which supports numerous charities and organizations. 

This year’s class, including the 1,868 students who graduated in the winter, totals 6,392. Sacramento State has an annual enrollment of about 29,000 students.
