Serge Lee, Social Work, spent six weeks (April/May 2007) during his sabbatical as a Fulbright Senior Specialist grantee providing lecture and curriculum development in social work to Guizhou University for Nationalities, Guizhou Province, China, and assisted in implementation of the UC Davis Cancer Center's "Hmong Hepatitis B Prevention" research project which being conducted by Asian Americans Network for Cancer Awareness Research and Training.
Terry Thomas, Education, was a speaker at the 17th biennial World Conference for Gifted and Talented Education held at Warwick University, England, Aug. 6-9. His presentation described how the Academic Talent Search and Accelerated College Entrance programs at Sacramento State are blurring the traditional boundaries between public school and university curricula and how they represent model University/School Partnerships for advanced students. Thomas also served as chair of a session focusing on academic acceleration for gifted and talented students.
Francis Yuen, Social Work, is the co-editor of a new book, Disability and Social Work Education: Practice and Policy Issues published by The Haworth Press. The book explores the complex issues associated with disability and examines effective strategies and the latest research information for professional practice and education.
Mark Brown, Government, spoke in June at the Centre for Ethics and Technology, Delft University of Technology, and at a workshop titled, "The Commodification of Academic Research" at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam. Brown also presented a paper on the politics of bioethics at the annual meeting of the Science and Democracy Network in Cambridge, England. His article, "Can Technologies Represent Their Publics?" was published in the current issue of the journal Technology in Society.
Martin Brittan, Biological Sciences Emeritus, was honored with a historical perspective in the February 2007 issue of Copeia, the journal of the American Society of Icthyologists, in which his 40-year career at Sacramento State was featured.
Capital Public Radio received two awards from the Public Radio News Directors Inc., at a July ceremony in New Orleans. Awards included Best Documentary for “Dina’s Diary,” produced by Paul Conley and Dina Howard and Best Series, (second place) for “All About Bonds,” produced by Marianne Russ and Jenny O’Mara.
