Former
Hornet Football Coach Bob Mattos helping with Sports Complex
Former Sacramento State football coach Bob Mattos has re-joined the University
to help generate community excitement and support for the University's Alex
G. Spanos Sports and Recreation Complex. Mattos will serve as a special consultant
for development and work in the University Advancement office.
The winningest
coach in school history, Mattos guided the Hornets from
1978-1992. He did not post a losing record in nine of his final 11 seasons and
led Sacramento State to the NCAA Div. II Playoffs in 1988. That year, the Hornets
posted an 8-2 mark in the regular season and opened the playoffs with a 35-14
win at UC Davis The team knocked off North Carolina Central, 56-7, the following
week before falling to North Dakota State, 42-20, in the semifinals.
The Alex G. Spanos
Sports and Recreation Complex is an ambitious project that will change the face
and character of Sacramento State. Plans include a new field house and will
be called the Broad Athletic Facility; as well as a Recreation, Wellness and
Events Center; Arena; and renovated Stadium.
Mattos had 49 former
players go on to sign professional contracts following their collegiate careers.
That list includes John Gesek and Lorenzo Lynch as well as current Atlanta Falcons
offensive coordinator Greg Knapp.
