Samantha
Hilber, recent graduate from Biological Sciences, presented her Honors
Thesis "Egg Size Through Consecutive Spawnings in the Convict Cichlid"
at the Ecological and Evolutionary Ethology of Fishes 2006 conference at Soka
University of America in Aliso Viejo on June 5.
Justin Knighten completed an internship over the summer in
Washington, D.C. with Talk Radio News Service and College Media News through
the Washington Center.
Grants
Katherine D. McReynolds, Chemistry, was awarded a grant from
CSUPERB (California State University Program for Education and Research in Biotechnology)
entitled "Studies Directed Towards the Synthesis of Anti-Viral Glycodendrimers."
This grant is being used to provide stipends for undergraduate and graduate
students to gain valuable hands-on experience working in the laboratory on novel
research.
Scholarship
Tom Knutson and Sutirat Posirisuk, Communication
Studies, will have their manuscript, “Thai Relational Development and
Rhetorical Sensitivity as Potential Contributors to Intercultural Communication
Effectiveness: JAI YEN YEN,” published in the Journal of
Intercultural Communication Research. The paper reports the results of
research identifying elements of effective intercultural communication.
Tom Knutson, Communication Studies, spent the early part of
the summer in Thailand where he lectured and conducted research at Bangkok University
and Kasetsart University. Knutson also presented a workshop for a group of Mexican
scholars and students from The International Business Leadership Program, Tecnologico
de Monerrey, during their summer academic trade mission to Thailand. The topic
of Knutson’s presentation was “Thai and Mexican Culture: Manyana
and Mai Pen Rai. Knutson, along with Richard Adams, English,
also coordinated and supervised Sacramento State students serving as English
teaching assistants at the Chitralada Royal Palace School.
Bill Leach, Center for Collaborative Policy, organized and
chaired a panel at the Midwest Political Science Association conference in Chicago,
April 20-21. The panel brought together editors of three major books published
last year to discuss common themes across the three volumes: The Deliberative
Democracy Handbook: Strategies for Effective Civic Engagement in the 21st Century,
Swimming Upstream: Collaborative Approaches to Watershed Management and
Adaptive Governance and Water Conflict: New Institutions for Collaborative
Planning. During the conference, Leach also presented a paper on “Implementing
Voluntary Agreements in Stakeholder Partnerships.”
Rob Wassmer, Public Policy and Administration, participated
in a national forum on "Exploring the Linkage Between Density and Affordability"
sponsored by the Urban Land Institute in Washington, D.C. on May 25.
Spencer Freund, Academic Affairs, was one of 150 attendees
representing many Fortune 100 companies at the invitation-only 2006 Dell Platinum
Advisory Council held from May 15-17. Created 12 years ago as a forum to discuss
critical technology issues, the event is an opportunity for executives to exchange
ideas and innovations influencing today’s business with a focus on creating
strong partnerships that lead to innovative marketplace solutions. Freund also
was one of six panel members discussing “Stability of In-building Wireless
Systems Performance and Security” at the recent GTC West 2006 conference
in Sacramento. He spoke on the underlying strategies of the CSU's Telecommunications
Infrastructure Initiative.
Will Corral, Foreign Languages, will have his book Theory’s
Empire featured at the International Association of Comparative Literature
conference. The book will be the focus of a panel discussion during the association’s
conference in Rio de Janeiro in 2007.
Jonathan D. Kaplan, Economics, was an invited presenter at
the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) Workshop on
Information Deficiencies in Agri-Environmental Policy held at OECD Headquarters
in Paris, on June 6. The workshop was attended by delegates from the 30 member
nations. He presented research on policy design for conservation compliance
on highly erodible land.
Ron Coleman, Biological Sciences, presented a paper "Brood
Developmental Stage Affects Parental Defense by Female Convict Cichlids”
at the Ecological and Evolutionary Ethology of Fishes 2006 conference at Soka
University of America in Aliso Viejo on June 5.

for KXJZ for a story about Oak Park which aired on May 31.
Tony Platt, Social Work, had his non-fiction story, “Uncommon
Ground” featured Sunday, May 28 on National Public Radio’s Weekend
Edition.
Lisa Beutler, Center for Collaborative Policy was featured
in an article in the Reno Gazette-Journal on the third graduating class
of the North Lake Tahoe-Truckee Leadership Program.
David J. Leon, Ethnic Studies/Chicano Studies, served as a
consultant and appeared in a KVIE documentary “The Braceros.”
Arthur Williamson, History, was interviewed on July 12 on BBC-Edinburgh,
Radio 3, about the 16th-century political theorist, George Buchanan one of the
early founders of democratic and civic traditions that culminated in the American
and French Revolutions. Williamson had presented a paper to a conference on
Buchanan at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland.
