Sacramento State’s annual Move-in Day had a different feeling Friday, Aug. 28 with the opening of the first new residence hall on campus since 1990.

The four-story, 209,000-square-foot American River Courtyard has 606 beds and features apartment-style living with studio, two-bedroom, four-bedroom and five-bedroom suite configurations. Construction began on the facility in late 2007.

Each suite features large, light-friendly windows, a living room, a kitchenette with full-size refrigerator, a microwave and sink, an in-suite bathroom and separate bedrooms that offer students a quiet place to study.

The complex also includes Internet connections and Wi-Fi access, a computer lab, multimedia meeting rooms, an entertainment lounge, a café and a sandwich shop.

It is LEED-certified and incorporates state-of-the-art sustainable green technology including low energy efficient lighting and cooling systems. The facility outperformed the energy code by “an outstanding 25 percent,” according to Victor Takahashi, director of Facilities, Planning and Construction Services.

The residence hall is available to second-year returning resident students and transfer, international and graduate students.

American River Courtyard joins the University’s other on-campus student residency buildings – Desmond Hall, Draper Hall, Jenkins Hall, Sierra Hall and Sutter Hall – and boosts campus housing capacity by more than 50 percent, to about 1,700 students.  It is a key element in the University’s goal to move from a commuter college to a destination campus, says University President Alexander Gonzalez.
