Tom Kando
, Sociology Emeritus, published an article titled, "What is the Mind? Don’t Study Brain Cells to Understand It," in the June issue of International Journal on World Peace.The article deconstructs the current reductionist fad which attempts to locate human emotions, aptitudes and thoughts in brain structure and in brain chemistry. 

Maria Jaoudi, Humanities and Religious Studies, appeared in the History Channel program, "Indiana Jones and the Ultimate Quest.” She spoke about the film character’s transformation of consciousness and how he goes through not only external adventures, but an internal metamorphosis.

Cynthia Linville, English, had the following poems  published or accepted for publication: "What should I do with all these love poems now?" and "I came to the river to grieve" in The Sacramento News & Review; "Meditating in Yoga Class," "Spelunking," and "Lost in the Fog" in The Rattlesnake Review; "Aiming for the Horizon," "High Church," and "Kissed by Venus" on Medusa's Kitchen; "Cultivating Thorns," "Swimming Upstream," "Pilgrimage to Duncan's Landing," and "Great-Grandfather" (winner of an Honorable Mention in the Sacramento Poetry Center's 2008 contest) in Poetry Now. Linville’s revised book chapter, "Editing Line by Line," is forthcoming in the second edition of ESL Writers: A Text for Writing Center Tutors, due out in January 2009 from Boyton-Cook.

Donald Carper and John LaRocco, Business Administration, co-authored the lead article in the July edition of the American Arbitration Association Dispute Resolution Journal titled, "Comparing Attributes of Litigation, Arbitration, and Mediation and other Basics of ADR."

Craig Gallet, Economics, recently had two papers accepted for publication.  The first, co-authored with Gary Hoover and Junsoo Lee, entitled "The Determinants of Laws Restricting Youth Access to Tobacco", is forthcoming in Contemporary Economic Policy.  The second, co-authored with Jesse Catlin (M.A. in Economics from Sacramento State) is entitled, "The Determinants of Tobacco Control in Europe,” and is forthcoming in Social Science Journal.

Caio Miguel, Psychology, had the following articles accepted for publication:
“Using conditional discrimination training to establish derived textual control in activity schedules with children diagnosed with autism,” Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis and, “An integrated model for conducting a behavior systems analysis,” Journal of Organizational Behavior Management.

Bill Leach, Center for Collaborative Policy, co-presented a talk titled, “Measuring the Success of Civic Engagement,” at the Mayors and Council Members Executive Forum of the League of California Cities, Olympic Valley, June 6.

In the News

Anthony Sheppard, Recreation, Parks and Tourism Administration, conducted an interview that appeared in the July 31 issue of Capitol Weekly. The interview with actor Kevin Costner addressed his film Swing Vote, a satirical look at what might happen in a Presidential election if the outcome was decided by a single voter.  Sheppard was also interviewed for the Aug. 3 edition of the Sacramento Bee and on the Aug. 7 screening of “Sacramento & Co.”  As one of the co-directors of the 9th Annual Sacramento Film & Music Festival, Sheppard discussed this year's event and its significance in the Sacramento arts community.

Judy Bossuat, Music, was quoted in the Sacramento Bee on May 27 regarding The String Project at Sacramento State, a program in which 4th- 8th grade students make music on instruments they construct. 

Timothy Howard, Communication Studies, co-authored the article, “The Three C’s of Teams, Part III Clarity.” The article appeared in the Central Valley Business Journal on April 28.

Tim Hodson, Center for California Studies, was quoted in the Fresno Bee on May 8 regarding the history of labor union activities.

Dianne Hyson, Family and Consumer Sciences, was quoted in the Modesto Bee on April 28 regarding nutrition and athletics.

Satsuki Ina, Education, was mentioned in San Francisco’s Nichi Bei Times April 24 regarding her role as the convener of a symposium examining the lives and legacy of Japanese women.

Ted Lascher, Public Policy and Administration, quoted in the Sacramento News and Review on May 29 regarding the unethical nature of push polling.

Amy Liu, Sociology, was interviewed on KCRA Channel 3 May 23 and was heard on KXJZ FM-CPR radio May 23 regarding the driving habits of Sacramento motorists.    

Barbara O’ Connor, Communication Studies, was interviewed on KCRA Channel 3 May 13 regarding the June 3 primary elections; on KCRA Channel 3 May 19 and 26 regarding the 2008 Sacramento Mayor election; on KXJZ FM –CPR radio May 21 regarding Sacramento author Jordan Summers; on KCRA Channel 3 May 23 regarding the driving habits of Sacramento motorists.

Suzanne O’Keefe, Economics, was quoted in the Sacramento Business Journal on May 9 regarding job growth and Sacramento’s economic outlook.

Deborah Pittman, Music, was mentioned in the Daily News on May 2 regarding her participation as a judge of a regional competition for young musicians.

Robert Waste, Public Policy and Administration, appeared on KCRA Channel 3 May 13 regarding the June 3 primary elections. 

Student Spotlight

Jordan Serin, Anthropology graduate student, co-authored a poster presented at the June 2008 Human Behavior and Evolution Society Annual Conference in Kyoto, Japan, with his supervisor Roger Sullivan. The poster was titled, "Perceptions of Natural in the Domains of Food and Medicine."

Robyn Bilski , Biological Sciences graduate student, was awarded second place for “Best Student Presentation” on her thesis work (supervised by Ron Coleman, Biology and Tim Horner, Geology) on salmon spawning habitat at the California-Nevada Chapter meeting of the American Fisheries Society (April 5, Lake Tahoe).
