Technology streamlines financial aid

Many Sacramento State students will receive a nice surprise in the mail this fall in the form of an earlier-than-usual financial aid check. The change is due to recent computer system upgrades and process changes within a number of units on campus.

In all, 1,500 more students received their financial aid earlier this year than last year. And the campus distributed $28.5 million in aid during the initial weekend push to get the work started, topping last year’s effort by nearly $8 million.

“Everyone involved has really worked hard on behalf of our students,” says Ed Mills, associate vice president for student affairs, enrollment management. “I want to congratulate all the staff in the Financial Aid Office, Outreach, Admissions and Records, Administrative Computing Services, and Student Financial Services.”

The next big effort will be to get transfer credit evaluations completed no later than the end of fall.

The staff are working to complete evaluations faster than in the past. With the new computer system and the real-time information it will offer students, faculty and staff, an even earlier transfer credit evaluation has become vital. It can make a difference determining a students' remaining academic requirements as well as class level for financial aid eligibility.

On a related note, the Financial Aid Office is asking faculty and staff to guide students to them for advice if they are thinking of dropping a course or withdrawing from school. Those decisions have more than academic implications; they can significantly impact current and future financial aid awards.
